Now that someone's guessed the location, some details: the Kellshore Hotel is quite a piece of Uptown's storied past. It goes from 713-756 Irving Park Road and is nearly 100 years old (dates vary between 1913 and 1915). It's now known as the Irving Apartments.
The National Register of Historic Places says:
"In 1943, the Chicago Plan Commission's Master Plan included a single photograph to illustrate the Chicago courtyard apartment — this photo was of the Kellshore. Designed by architect E. Norman Brydges, the Kellshore is notable for its modern geometrical lines, its handsome tan glazed brick, and white terra cotta ornament. The courtyards are partially screened from the street by a one-story wall and green tiled entrance gate."
Below are photos of the entire sign and of the Kellshore in its heyday:
Uptown.
ReplyDeleteApproximately Windsor and Sheridan. A bit north of there.

ReplyDeleteMy friends from www.PreservationChicago.com can probably help me our here. This is the beautiful courtyard building at the northeast corner of Clarendon and irving Park Road.
ReplyDeleteThe name of the Hotel escapes me but I can't forget the beautiful architectural details.
That would make sense, Ben, since UU also did a post about "Awake" next door.
ReplyDeleteI never noticed that it had a "hotel" sign. I never would have thought that a courtyard building of that size would have at one time been a residential hotel. I always thought of them being in highrises. Anyone out there know a lot about these old residential hotels during their hey-day?
The only think I "know" is that a lot of visiting celebrities used to stay in these residential hotels in pre-WWII years, while doing multi-night performances at the Uptown, Aragon et al.
ReplyDeleteBen, you are correct! Kudos. More info and photos of this lovely historical building has been added to the main page.
ReplyDeleteSassy, you're too darn clever. We've got to get a better M.O. ;-)
Wow...a pretty deluxe roof top deck...and it isn't even condo! (the vintage pic.)
ReplyDeleteI used to live in this building. An interior closet wall had, what looked like, gears in it to open the wall into the living room. I'm presuming for a murphy bed. It wasn't functional when I lived there. It must have been a pretty swinging place when it was first built.
ReplyDeleteWow. That photo is STUNNING! Thanks, UU!
ReplyDeleteanother good photo as well as a little bit of info is available here:

i hope that works...
interestingly, the address is listed as Graceland and Clarendon Aves - What is now Irving Park was originally Graceland Ave from the lake to Western Avenue tho I haven't been able to find out when the name changed. Some time between 1913 and 1928 - as I've seen a photo of LSD and Irving Park with the latter date
also, here's a pretty fascinating history of the area:

in the late 1880s Clarendon Avenue seems to have been the logical continuation of Halsted Street - but not in 1909 when the street numbering system was standardized
