Mall Cops

A reader says: "1, 2..... 10 police cars at Sunnyside Mall at around 6:15. I don't know any details, but it looks like they are snooping around for drugs."

  1. I missed this?

God I hope the cops are all over this this summer. Last summer was a nightmare there.

    Let the positive loitering begin.

  4. I just counted 5 cop cars plus a paddy wagon stream down Lawrence towards Broadway. Make that 6.

  5. Was Paul Blart there? I hear he's good. Real good.

  6. Something has to be done to take back the corner....maybe they should create a dog park in that park of the Sunnyside mall to encourage positive loitering.

  7. Can someone please tell me what/where is Sunnyside Mall?

  8. Sunnyside Mall is located at 4500 N (1 block North of Montrose) and runs from Magnolia to Beacon. It is a walking mall that is open only to foot traffic.

  9. Yes, it is a walking mall, like the one in D.C. I, being the idiot I'm prone to be, always thought it was a shopping center. And I always got confused when I went looking for it.

  10. Hmm. This is odd. I was walking north on Magnolia from Montrose to Sunnyside about 15 minutes before these events. The area was very quiet. Almost too quiet for the weather outside.

Broncho Billy Park was vacant. Not a soul in site. Unmarked units(narcotics likely) were sweeping the alleys. I walked past a couple of dog walkers heading east on Montrose that seemed like they wanted to walk down Magnolia, but opted out and kept moving east on Montrose.

As I walked into the mall to head over to Malden there were two males hanging out and three younger looking males walking towards them and shouting as if they knew eachother. The three were walking south on Magnolia coming from Wilson. Behind the three were what looked like a group of 7-8 individuals.

In my view, the size of a group that makes you change where you wanted to go and start searching for routes of escape.

Sunnyside Mall on the Magnolia side is clearly the higher risk area. Whenever you are in this area I would be on high alert. Be aware of everything going on around you. You're in gangland. The police know it. Signs are posted around this area alerting the gangs that recruitment and other crimes carry additional penalties and fines due to the proximity to a school.

  11. About Soul's last comment - there is some truth to that, but there are also numerous condos right at that intersection and nearby. Come summertime, there is a lot these condo owners and the vast majority of law abiding apartment renters (even low-income) can do to make this area feel completely different. Namely, enjoy the weather and reclaim this space for anyone who isn't a gangbanger/dealer.

  12. Isn't it already a dog park?

  13. COP WATCH makes me sick to my stomach.

Why don't you WATCH what happens if you invite one of these scumbag sociopathic gangbangin animals into your home for tea and cookies.

Thank you CPD. Please do more, more often, and more aggresively.

  14. chgorun,

i'm sure that all the uu people who claim to really care about human beings and who want to be good neighbors and who abhor racism and classism will object to your language and generalizations...well, maybe not.

    you are uptown update.

  15. ron durham,

Feel good to get a cheap shot in and attempt to paint everyone here with the same brush based off one crackpot who's probably a troll?

Your tired, outmoded ideas are getting close to their expiration date, so I guess I can understand why you'd resort to petty stuff like this.

  16. Chgorun's comment has nothing to do with racism or classism.

I could not agree with him/her more. I have ZERO empathy or sympathy for the gang members firing shots on our streets.

Ron- If you care about them, then take them into your home see what happens. What makes for a better neighbor - a law abiding, friendly, respectful citizen or a filthy rat randomly fiiring 15 shots on a crowded street?

Generalizations???!!!!!! I would say that it is pretty fair to "generalize" that anybody shooting a gun on a city street at 7pm is a scumbag.

In the words of our pathetic ex-govenor, BLEEP THEM.

Uptown Update is comment-driven, making all participants part of the site.

Ron, with all the time you and Nate and your Couraj buddies spend perusing and commenting here, you too are Uptown Update. Welcome to the club! I look forward to seeing the UU sign in the window of the Catholic Worker home. You're part of us, comrade.

  18. Catholic Workers what a joke I do not think any of those people are Catholic and I am damn sure they do not work.

If this sentiment is not commonly held why is it that Ron is the only one questioning it?
