Uptown Broadway Building Gets Some Color

A reader sends us this pic of the north facing side of the Uptown Broadway Building. It has recently been painted a bluish-gray color and two small spotlights have been added at the top. We can only assume that some sort of mural will be added since this is prime advertising space. Stay tuned.

  1. Sure beats the paintball splotches that were there for years. It would be cool to have an ad or picture there that's as retro as the building.

  2. I actually thgough the paintball splotches were kinda cool in a way. But hey, if a big Big Light ad is better, go for it.

  3. I predict a BIG picture of Helen Shiller with "Welcome to Uptown's Entertainment Corridor" LOL....oh wait, that building is in Mary Ann Smith's Ward...never mind...

    I just hate Helen....

  4. There was decorative brickwork on that wall that would have been nice to accent. Like bricked in gothic windows or something. You can see the outline in this shot. Looks like the lower half used to be two rows of four advertising spaces also.

  6. I'm with caring neighbor.

A retro ad would just be awesome on that building!!!

If anyone knows the name of the developer - please post it. I work for an ad agency, we have a lot of big clients, and I'd love to try and get one of them to put a vintage ad up (Coke would be a hell of a candidate for 1920's vintage, eh?).

Triple win-win situation really. Building gets revenue. The advertiser gets some local buzz. And our neighborhood would get some positive publicity (after we put a couple press releases together).

All Uptown needs is to start building a positive cache around it's architectural heritage and untapped potential....

-It brings new interest into the neighborhood

-It ignites the curiousity of artists and creative-types who would make the neighborhood more interesting and appealing

-And it gives small businesses a reason to open and take a risk on Broadway, Wilson, and Lawrence.

  7. SheridanParkParade, the building is both being developed by and leased by At Properties. The number is here: 773-537-0200.

BWChicago, this is the side of the building in 1977. I'm sure there was something grander there when the building was originally built, but I can't find any photos.

  8. My memory is that it may have had elongated decorative lanterns on it. I think there was at least one skeleton of one on the trackside left hanging in recent years. Was probably scrapped with other non-developer friendly details.
