(No) Friday Night Lights

See all the new retro streetlights lining the walking path between Wilson and Lawrence in the park? Bet they cost a bundle, and they're very nice! Well, best to admire them during daylight, because you won't be able to see much of them at night:

Of the 13 lights, eight aren't working, four are, and one can't make up its mind. We looked and it doesn't appear to be a copper wiring theft situation. They seem to be just plain burned out and no one bothered to do anything about it.

Of course, who needs streetlights in a dark park? At night? Along the path where people run, jog and stroll? That's not the Uptown way!

311 has been called. (But we can't help but think someone in the city should have noticed and corrected this, long before two-thirds of the lights stopped working.)

  1. Call the district superintendent of the ward-streets and san. They will get on the case.

  2. Don't hold your breath that they will come out to fix anything anytime soon, I called 311 on raw sewage flowing along the curb on Wells and Washington (downtown) a month and a half ago and it's still there.

Just wait till they actually DO the layoffs, nothing will get done.

  3. If any work, it's actually an improvement--I called 311 a couple weeks ago because ALL of them between Montrose and Lawrence were out. I definitely saw some working the other night.

  5. When I called 311 today, the operator who took the information said the lights are the responsibility of the Parks Department.

  6. I've called on the lights in that stretch of park before. When the lights were first installed and the paths repaved (2 years ago), the park's 'regulars' smashed several of the lights that were illuminating their favorite drug transaction spots. It took over a month before the lights were fixed. I'm happy to report that the population of 'regulars' in that stretch of park has dwindled significantly in the past 2 years. It's amazing what some lighting, some new asphalt and some trimming of trees will do... Plus some regular patrolling by the Beat Cops and Human Services. The end result is that the Seniors in the area are frequently using the park now for it's intended purposes. TSN is right, the lights are the responsibility of the Parks Dept.

  7. I have a more frightening tale of lights out... Last Spring there was a street light out on the east side of Marine at the bus stop where Leland used to come through before the Weiss expansion (a whole 'nother neighborhood gripe). I called on the light sometime in February and again in March... A week or so after my call in March, someone was stabbed at the bus stop. A week after the incident, I noticed that the light was still out and called it in again... I was shocked that the light hadn't been fixed after the stabbing... Didn't the Beat Cops responding to the call notice the light out? I called it in again, and again a week later... It finally got fixed some time in late April if I recall correctly.
