And Speaking Of The Uptown Broadway Building...

A reader brought this to our attention:

While passing this beautiful edifice this afternoon I noticed a sign in one of the windows with the "PUBLIC NOTICE" portion in red at the top. This sign stated that there is a request for a zoning change to allow a bar/nightclub to go into the renovated basement space of this building. Now, I know there used to be a bar in that very same space but wonder if that zoning was changed at some point for good cause. Hearsay talks of many problems with the last bar that was there such as quite a bit of violence both in and outside the space. In any case, this is the sign I saw today.

  1. Is the supper-club from the owners of "Club Lucky" still planned for this space?

Both the basement and first floor must be leased.

  3. What's your take on there being a bar or bar/restaurant in this building? I like the idea, it'd be another fun place to go in Uptown. But, it's in your backyard, not mine.

(We supported the new restaurant Ropa receiving a full liquor license, they're quite literally on the block we live on up here in Rogers Park. We haven't been disappointed by them so far, but of course, RP is a bit different than Uptown.)

  4. Al, I support it! Critics may say that it will increase traffic in the neighborhood, but I consider that a small price to pay for the larger benefits of having a viable business community in the neighborhood.

  5. Bars/restaurants bring in other businesses to the area. So I support them better than a ss clinic.

  6. I was at Fat Cat the other night. As soon as the Beck concert at the Aragon was over, they pumped up the music and opened the windows to draw attention to the place. Within moments, it was packed with people who'd been at the concert.

It made me think of all the concerts that have been at the Riv and the Aragon over the past 15 or 20 years, and how many potential customers have walked as fast as they could to their cars and driven out of Uptown to spend their money elsewhere because there was nowhere local for them to go.

Having the Kinetic Playground, the Uptown Lounge, Crew, Marigold, and Fat Cat all right there is amazing to long-time residents like me. I still marvel at how many people now stick around Uptown on concert nights (and other nights, come to think of it) instead of leavig ASAP.

I hope for two things: that any lounge in the Uptown Broadway Building enjoys the same success as the other establishments I mentioned, and that someday the 46th Ward will have the same retail and entertainment opportunities that the 48th Ward has seen in the past few years.
