Ald. Shiller Turns Down Raise To Earn $110,556 A Year

Read all about it at the Sun-Times here. Even a broken clock is right at least twice a day. Oh, and don't feel too bad for her. She is still raking in $104,101 a year. Kudos to Ald. Smith and Ald. Tunney for doing the same thing.

  1. I am a City employee, and I wish I was getting a 6% cost of living raise!

  2. Whether her decision was based on genuine concern for the city budget, wanting to stand in solidarity with taxpayers and city employees or pure political calculation I don't know.

I do know it was a smart political move.

  3. I've got no beef with the six figure salary that comes with being an alderman.

I'm fortunate enough to have a pretty decent income, and I've got to tell you.....I'd need a bit more than $110k to have to sit through caps meeting after caps meeting, listen to urban planners pontificate beyond the vanishing point of interest, weigh in on zoning infractions, helping new businesses owners prosper, looking for creative ways to lure new businesses and jobs to the ward, making tough decisions about housing statutes, constantly be on your toes in terms of facilitating conversations with various neighborhood stakeholders, fostering a sense of pride for the neighborhood, actually returning the many calls and letters of concerned citizens..........

Oh, wait.....I'm not sure our alderman does any of this...

Wow, she must have finally looked in the mirror and felt a little guilty for her lack of leadership.

This is the only commendable thing about Shiller I've ever come across.

Yeah, that'll close the gap. LOL.

  5. Good for them, but they shouldn't be able to choose whether or not to take an increase - one should have never been offered!

A 6% raise and the city is laying 1,000's off? Where is Daley's head at?

  6. I'm not sure I can hate on that, either, but I'm sure as heck not gonna' let one of the very few proper decisions she makes (and a scant one at that) overshadow the overwhelming slew of horrible decisions she's made and continues to make.

  7. It's only making a statement they all have to accept the money.

So knowing they will get the raise anyway if it passes which it will is good PR.

  8. ha ha, well said sheridanparkparade.

I agree with you miss kitty. Shame on our elected officials for putting themselves above their people.

So Daley plans on laying off union trash collectors, cops, firefighters; allow raises for aldermen all-the-while Chicago has the highest municipal sales tax rate of all U.S. cities. I would hate to think the Olympic bid has anything to do with this.

What's that old quote? ....stand on the backs of many...

  9. Now, if we could just get Carol Ronen to give back that $1 million of unearned pension income.

  10. I will give credit where credit is due this is the right thing to do regardless of reason. Sadly most of her colleagues did not make the same decision and look very foolish in my opinion. It appears arrogance remains present throughout most of The City Council.

  11. I say 'whatever'.....
She clearly must realize her 'popularity' is on the wane.
    This is a stunt.
