A reader writes in:
"There have only been 443 kidnappings all this year in Chicago (per chicagocrime.org), yet Uptown has had 2 this past month of August, with both occurring in mid-afternoon. The police aren’t talking, but photos and published crime stats and don’t lie."

  1. How in God's name have we not heard about this? I'm signed up to get emergency notifications from our 23rd District and it seems like hey, this sure would be a good one to report to us!

What is the CPD and specifically the 23rd District thinking not letting us know about this?

  2. Perhaps "kidnapping" also includes one parent grabbing their kid when custody is with the other parent?

I know when I read "kidnapping" I think windowless vans and pedophiles. My guess is that most kidnappings are far less sensational (Still a crime, I agree).

Kind of like "identify theft" includes someone using your credit card without your knowledge...

  4. The postings state these were not "Domestic." With all of the convicted sex offenders living in Uptwon, it is amazing there haven't been more --- or have there?

  5. There seems to have been another kidnapping attempt today around 4:00 p.m. at the Walgreens on Ridge and Broadway. Police scanner said 12yr old girl resisted being pulled into a van by "three white males" and ran home, did not talk to police. They speculated on the scanner that it may have been gang war (Latin Kings; other gang not named)... Shot were fired at/near Walgreens, which triggered (no pun meant) the initial 911 call. No known injuries, ONE SUSPECT was in custody at 4:30 p.m. Witnesses would not talk, crime/s not caught on Walgreens video system.

  6. There are a lot of white guys in the Latin Kings.

Maybe it's just me, but does there seem to be a lot of that in the media now days? I hear a lot of "white or hispanic" when describing suspects. Even dead bodies. Is this a trend?

Maybe I just notice it because I have had to work my tail off making sure I can tell race so not to offend?

I used to live by that Walgreens. Pretty busy for no one to see this and step in and I really don't think 12 year old girls should be walking around Chicago without parents. Regardless of time.

  7. One trend I have been noticing on the police scanner of late is that officers referring to latinos as white hispanics.

There are blond haired, blue eyed Cubans, etc. This type of descrition is helpful when searching for a suspect and trying to avoid the "traditional" image when the suspect is of Latin decent.

  9. After our shady visitor a few weeks ago when my wife was at the Buena playlot, this just scares the crap out of me. I notice that one event was at Clarendon Park (4500 block of Marine Drive and on park property according to the Everyblock info). What the hell happened and why don't we know more about this?!?

  10. The 4500 Marine Dr. was an attempt kidnapping, child got away from the offender. There are fliers at the 23rd district station put out by Area 3 Detectives. And it occurred on the 4500 Block of Broadway and the child called from Marine Dr.
