We have received several emails from folks wanting a forum in which to discuss coming up with a slogan for Uptown residents to display on buttons, bumper stickers, or signs, to show our solidarity in fighting crime in our neighborhood. Any ideas?
This was originally brainstormed at the FORUM Meeting at Kahawa Coffee House. Feel free to throw out suggestions, and then we will move forward to have it designed by a graphic designer. The goal is to have a window decal to be put in all storefronts and homes.
At the meeting, my suggestion was "NOT ON OUR BLOCK," with something on the bottom to the effect of "Uptown Residents Against Crime, Drugs, and Gangs."
We have lots of families here. We should choose something positive and sunshin-y. I choose:
"Our Children Live Here!"
It promotes community, safety, positivity, and a pleasant living environment in which we live.
Yes, I know we don't all have children specifically. But they all belong to us. Those "short" folks will grow up to be "tall" folks among us.
Also, those children LIVE here. For better or worse and they have no choice.
They say you should dress for the job you want, not the one you have. I say we should do the same with our home. A slogan for the home we want, not the one we have currently.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die". Perhaps we could change it:
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Gang bangers firing guns across the shoulder of Wilson. I watched urine glitter in the dark near the Uptown Theater. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die".
What about "Uptown Citizens Unite: Stand UP against Gangs, Drugs, and Crime in Our Neighborhood!"...?
I realize it is wordy...but it pulls together some basic ideas from this board...it could be printed on T-shirts...the neighborhood could have particular days (maybe once a week?) when EVERYONE wears 'em while they're out and about...
I like the short ones. It has to be visible and legible from say, across the street. So when criminals walk down your block they see these signs staring them down.
I like the Stand UPtown too. Simple, could be done graphically-nice, and it says multiple things... Stand up to it's citizens... making a stand in Uptown to the rabble.

NOT ON OUR BLOCK is way to close to NOT IN MY BACKYARD or NIMBY, so while it may capture the spirit, it doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteI really like the play on UP and UPtown. Its positive and catchy.
How about
Stand UP
Speak UP
Rise UP
UPtown
or maybe from the other side
UPlifting
UPstart
UPswing
UPtown
I don't really like UPswing per se, I just like the whole play on the word UP and the meaning about a place getting better.
What if it's just UP.
