Overheard Today At Truman College

A meeting was held today between Uptown's block clubs, CAPS, and various important Uptown groups along with Rep. Greg Harris. Another Uptown Town Hall Meeting for residents is in the works. Alderman Shiller was in attendance today and she was heard to say, "Well, let's hope we can work together to accomplish some things."

  1. That woman's got a set on her, does she not?

  2. Can we expect to have any minutes posted at this meeting? Given the lack of transparency in the past, it would be refreshing to have this kind of information available for everyone.

What time was the meeting held today? People who work during the day and are members of various block clubs would have a difficult time of making the meeting if it was held during work hours.

  3. Just Wondering-
This particular meeting wasn't open to the general public. Perhaps someone who attended can comment on what was accomplished today.

  4. Having a hard time keeping track of al the characters in Uptown? I just ran across this blog after doing a search for COURAJ. Also I might add that after doing the search for COURAJ I still do not know what they are about.

  5. RE: pb's comment.....I've seen this person around, and
I think he is a 'shiller plant'

I too would have liked to have attended this meeting, but alas schedules didn't jive.

  7. Sounds to me like someone is gettin' nervous. Perhaps she feels the heat from our two newish state legislators. After all they are out of Mary Ann Smith's organization in the 48th Ward and my informed guess is that Alderbeast Smith is not a big fan of Alderbeast Shiller.

Betcha, that whole Labor Ready thing set things a boilin'.

  8. PB is random. He says he just "ran across" the usual suspects blog, but the blog is posted by PB... Weird

  9. You'll notice a few new Uptown related blogs have popped up in the last week or even few days.

Some purporting to support "unity" and others with over the top racial commentary. Methinks the trolls are outteth in forceth and trying to play both ends of the spectrum for their own benefit.

One blog even has the JPUSA's own Jon "Hey I'm cool kids.....I have a huge freaking tattoo" Trott as a founder or contributor.

Somehow I don't think any blog will have the level of impact Uptown Update has had. It's nice when you see the trolls working hard and flailing.

  10. My concern is that Helen will try to make a few SMALL changes to her way of doing things just to get re=elected. Then it is back to way things were.. A leopard, as they say, never changes their spots... be careful on what you hear and believe..

  11. Helen has this unshakable belief that condo owners complain about crime for 2 reasons: to get rid of poor people and to make her look bad. Her staff drank the kool-aid and believe the same.

Rather than admit crime, she will speak of a misperception of crime. She will not make public endorsements about police cameras. She will not do much of anything. Having her suddenly change would be like many of us suddenly going gaga about how wonderful COURAJ is. It ain't gonna happen.

The damage is done. Shiller won the last election because she carried the boys town vote, which will not happen again.

  13. "Well, let's hope we can work together to accomplish some things." Wow, strong language from a decisive leader! She's like Churchill all of a sudden. errr.

    What's next:
"Hey you, shooting that gun, please take care because--once the election is nearer--I may publicly take a seemingly aggressive stance against your activities. I hope this does not discourage you from supporting me in the next election. What? Yes we can take donations of 20 dollar bills, I am surprised you have so many in a paper bag in your pants pocket! Don't hesitate to stop by my office for lessons on how to intimidate lawful residents with baseball bats."

  14. History has taught Uptown that when the "Madam of Uptown" gets involved, she brings in her goons to make lots of noise, she gets the mirophone and runs the clock. Nothing accomplished! Meeting over!!

  15. A closed meeting with block clubs during the day and Shiller actually appeared...Seems rather odd to me. Was anyone from the block clubs able to attend? Were all of the block clubs invited? I am curious.

  16. It might bear thinking that while (to my surprise for someone who got elected by being a post-primary substitution for Larry McKeon) a startling-effective Representative Greg Harris is one of the spearpoints on the community crime discussions...being a Chicago alderman is in many ways a step up from being an Illinois state representative.

I'm willing to bet that THIS is what has Alderbeast Shiller becoming suddenly concerned and suddenly listening and suddenly cooperative...she's trying to maneuver to protect herself from a possible challenge for her seat from GREG HARRIS. And you know, if he ran, I think that the Alderbeast will be making plans to retire to Cuba to be close to her hero Fidel (before he kicks the bucket).

    Just sayin'...

  17. I don't care who has designs on the 46th ward aldermanic seat as long as we get someone who pays attention to their constituents and isn't a Daley lapdog. Shiller and Daley should have thought about the longterm consequences of what they have been doing around here. It should be plainly apparent that most of us are not only angry but pretty well-read and will not be bought off with dog & pony shows, empty promises and transparent charades.

  18. At nearly every meeting or Uptown event I go to, and it's a fair number, I see the guy from Greg Harris's office and James Cappleman.

Except for Denice Davis coming (as a private citizen) to the meet&greet on the mall this past spring, I've NEVER seen the alderman or anyone from her office at a meeting unless it was one that they organized. (The obvious exception was the Town Hall meeting this month, where Shiller sat in the front row and kept silent.)

My future votes are with Cappleman and Harris. It's obvious that they care enough to hear what the residents are saying and feeling. 20+ years of indifference from Helen has convinced me to NEVER vote for a local politician who I don't see out and about during the non-campaign season.
