We are receiving reports of at least two streets (Kenmore and Winthrop) in Uptown that are without power; even the streetlights are out. Be careful out there, folks! Update: ComEd is estimating the power should be back on by 10:45 tonight.
Ugh....if only random power outages were the most pressing problems we face in Uptown. I walked by the 'memorial' shooting just north of Lawrence on Sheridan today. I found a police car parked, near the spray-painted eulogies. It's ironic, that a 'crime scene' is remembered by some, with another crime......gang markings via spray paint on the sidewalk and storefront facade.
My power came back on at 11:30. It was pretty funny because I was on my back deck, thinking I was alone in the dark. Once the lights flashed back on, cheering was heard all up and down the alleys. Apparently half of Truman Square was out on their decks!
BTW, Starck, the power being out (including all streetlights and safety lights) was a huge deal for the cops. They were driving up and down the streets non-stop, using their spotlights to shine light into all the nooks and crannies. With the current state of gang unrest and very real possibility of retribution, I imagine blocks and blocks of pitch black streets were the cops' worst nightmare.
There was a tiny fire on the red line el tracks @ Lawrence around 10:15pm. Some smoke and small flames could be seen from street level. The power went out shortly afterwards in the blocks east of the Aragon (though the Aragon, in the middle of a show, got to keep their power) and the fire dept scaled ladders and put the fire out. Power was switched on again for about 30 minutes before it went out yet again for a period.

ReplyDeleteThe lights in the 4600 & 4700 blocks of Broadway and Racine were out tonight.
ReplyDeleteYup, it looks pretty dark down Winthrop too.
