Woman Killed at Argyle Station

Update on 7/16/08: The Chicago woman who was struck and killed Tuesday by a CTA Red Line train on the North Side accidentally fell onto the tracks, authorities said. Friehiwet Tahir, 35, of the 5000 block of North Ridgeway Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood, died of multiple injuries after falling off the Argyle Street station platform, authorities said. An autopsy ruled her death accidental, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office spokesman. A rider on the train that struck Tahir reported seeing a woman's purse on the platform and a single black flat-style shoe on the track. (Chicago Tribune)

From the Chicago Tribune:

UPDATE: Power was restored to the system about 5:52 p.m., although as of 6:45 p.m. trains were still bypassing the Argyle station. A woman was killed, according to the medical examiner's office. Details to come.

CTA Red Line trains are stopped in both directions between the Wilson and Thorndale Avenues after a person was apparently struck by a northbound train at about 4:50 p.m.Tuesday, a CTA spokeswoman said. Preliminary reports indicate that a northbound train made contact with the person at the Argyle Street station on the Red Line, said CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski.

Power was shut down in both directions, she said. Bus shuttle service is operating between the Addison and Granville stations, stopping at all Red Line stations in all directions, Hosinski said. Trains are operating from Howard to Granville, and from 95th to Addison, she said.

UPDATE #2: Sadly, the death was ruled an accident.

  1. This was my "coffee girl" from the deli, 1st floor of the Sun Times building. I found out this morning when I went in to get my coffee. They had pictures of her displayed with a sad message about losing a friend. I couldnt believe it. We all have these people in our lives who know who we are by what we order etc. I was devastated. I just wanted to make the story more human. It's amazing how people can touch our lives.
