Mark your calendars, folks. If you happen to be off from work on
Thursday, August 14, head on down to the
Daley Center, Room 1111 at 9:30am. This will be the second court date for the hotel and owner Jay
Bomberg is expected to be there to detail what he has done to fix the countless (44) code violations and what he plans to do to make this place a better neighbor.
I believe 820 W Cuyler has a court date on August 7th, Daley Center, Room 1111. This building is a run-down, courtyard building that has harbored drug dealers in the past. There have been at least two shootings on Cuyler over the last 12 months.
ReplyDeleteCourt date is at 9:30 AM I believe.
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance this place will get shutdown? It would be huge for the businesses around there.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Judy Dever, who's the attorney representing the city in housing court, the plan is not to shut down the hotel, but to bring it into compliance with the law.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see some repercussions done to the scum that owns that "hotel" - but if it gets shutdown those clowns will be sleeping and pi**ing in everyone's lawns.
ReplyDeleteHelen will give them a shower and a meal on election day, but in the days between they're on their own.
This place is no better, than the now shuttered 'Wooden Nickel'
ReplyDeleteI think the only way to solve the problem is someone needs to convert it into a 'Luxury Condo Complex in Mid-Uptown'

ReplyDeleteWithout commenting on the sentiment, let me just point out that it's precisely these sentiments that Shiller uses to keep her voting base ... her voting base. She tells people in affordable housing that the "yuppies" want to force them out of their homes and out of Uptown. And that she's the only thing standing between them and homelessness.
Why she showed up at the previous housing court appearance for Wilson Club Hotel comes into clearer view.
Comments like this add kerosene to the fire, and Helen's standing there holding the match that started it all.
If you are interested in learning more about the history of this complex, you should read "The Homeless" by Christopher Jenkins. It discusses how it was once a cage hotel, etc...
ReplyDeleteWhile this building needs to be improved, the vile comments about people urinating in yards is mostly true...the City does not have other housing opportunities for many of these men, so this facility does have a positive impact. If you don't like it or understand why it is here, may I ask why you live in Uptown? It was here long before you...
Oh, Brandon.
ReplyDeleteIt's STILL a cage hotel.
It's in housing court -- not because people don't like living near it. It's in housing court because it has many, many code violations.
As far as "it was here first" -- sorry, buckaroo. My family was living in Uptown before it was built, and certainly before it became a dive.
It's dangerous for the people who live and die there. It's detrimental to businesses in the area.
The old "If you don't like it, don't live here" argument goes both ways, you do realize?
If you don't like proactive neighbors who want a safe and healthy community -- well, maybe Uptown's not for you.
If you don't like it or understand why it is here, may I ask why you live in Uptown?
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with the number of new posters who have joined us immediately offering judgmental comments in the threads? I say, welcome new readers/posters but please offer the mainstay personalities one courtesy: read through past items before you jump in. We've got a number of enduring (and intertwining) topics that readers rehash in various ways. If you'd like to join in please recognize that you are entering a much longer conversation even if you don't see it on one post/comment thread. When you fail to do that, you'll just piss people off rather than creating an opportunity for people to catch on to your perspective.
PS-This isn't necessarily directed at you excusively, Brandon. And, yes, I have read Christopher JENCKS book. Have you read Heatwave---another book that features Wilson Club?
