Long Lines For City Stickers At Ald. Shiller's Office Today

Folks were lined up down Broadway this afternoon to get their city stickers renewed. A reader sent in this photo from their cell phone. No Helen in the office today we are told.

  1. Ever heard of the currency exchange? Yeah they charged me a $5.50 service fee, but I was in and out the door with my new sticker in under two minutes on Monday night.

  2. 2-6 today for the stickers. The line is moving semi fast. It's a mobile DMV staff from the county clerks office, so don't expect any please and thank you's for donating your 75 dollars for a sticker.

Is this not the biggest scam the city has running? For real, 75 dollars for a sticker and the "right" to park on streets that the tax dollars allready paid for?

Whats next? Toll booths on the highways that the tax dolla....oops.

  3. I bought mine online...it was super easy, here's the link for anyone that wants to avoid the line:

    http://www.chicityclerk.com/licenses/online_index.html

I got it in the mail 2 days after I ordered it online. It said online that you can buy it up to July 15th without the late fee and they won't enforce the new stickers until July 16th.

  4. I bought mine online too. Easy and painless and no lines! Only hiccup was the city sticker was mailed separately from the parking sticker and passes, with no indication that's how they do it. Spent a weekend wondering if I was gonna have to wait in a long line just to fix the mess.

  5. Note this event. It's something for the calendar for a 2009 and 2010 promotion to steer foot traffic away from the Alderman's office.

  6. uptown_dad - these stickers are necessary in crowded neighborhoods in a city as big as Chicago. Imagine all the Schaumburgites that would take up all the street parking in Lakeview and Uptown on Cubs game days or just in general on weekend nights. You're essentially renting a parking spot for $75/year. Thats about 20 cents per day, rather than like $125/month in a lot.

  7. I get you hollywood beach. Well expept for the "Schaumburgites", are they affiliated with the taliban?

Oh and the fact that We "essentially" bought a parking space with our home. And that when I am out I "essentially" rent the parking spots by filling meters with quarters.

    What am I renting again?

  8. City stickers don't buy you the right to park on the street. They buy you the right to own a car, period. If your car is not registered in the City of Chicago, you don't need a city sticker (though they will get you if they suspect that you live in the city anyway).

The police recently got the right to go into private parking garages to check for city stickers, so you really aren't safe anywhere. You definitely still need a city sticker if you park in an open lot anywhere in the city.

  9. By the way, Schaumbergers (or whatever they are called) can still park on Chicago streets free of charge without a city sticker... So what right is the city sticker giving you again?

  10. City stickers are just a tax on owning a car in Chicago... just like feeding the parking meters (ba-DUM-bum).

But on the matter of buying them, I once again made the mistake of going to City Hall on the supposed last day to buy them on Monday (forgot about the grace period thing). Took about an hour. I'm waiting until the last minute to put it on the car, though. Want to milk every dime out of the old one....

  11. "though they will get you if they suspect that you live in the city anyway"

They will get you if you have an Illinois plate and are parked in Chicago.

And MOTS is right, it's (to quote the city's website) a "wheel" tax.

Proceeds, I'm sure, go to pay for our wonderful, smooth and pothole-free streets, lovely viaducts and .. I dunno, magic beans, or something.

    Who knows?

    The Beatles were right.

    (The Beatles are always right)

  12. I'm not a car owner, I thought you were referring to the "Zone" Stickers.

Yeah I guess the "City" stickers are a tax. A tax to live in this lovely city. If you don't agree, maybe Schaumburg is more fitting where your car can be parked in your long, nicely edged driveway in front of your cookie cutter home, free of stickers.

Personally, I prefer to rely on public transportation and Zipcar.

  13. Some of you folks should visit the 'Burbs some day, because I got news for you, their window's ain't sticker free. I'd venture to guess that almost all suburbs/villages have their own "wheel tax" with vehicle stickers. I know for a fact Scumburg does. You can get off cheaper though. I think only 20 bucks.

  14. Has Chicago got you so brainwashed that your now defending a tax?

Ever hear of the Stamp Act of 1765? Or Townshend Acts of 1767?

Chicago is getting crushed by taxes and fees. The day I don't loose my car in a pothole on LSD is the day we can talk about usefull sticker taxes.

Oh, on a side note to HB, our second car is a Zip Car. Anyone else kicking themselves for not coming up with that idea?

  15. Most of the suburban townships do charge a fee for vehicle registration. The stickers don't really permit you to park anywhere in particular. They just tell the local government how many vehicles you own as a way of determining how much weight your household adds to the roads they maintain.

The city sticker is a fee based tax on car owners. It doesn't grant you any particular parking privileges at all.

  16. I can't believe I'm going to do this, but I'm actually going to defend the city sticker tax.

Why? Because its taxes the people(car owners) who use the public services(the roads). If you don't own a car, you don't use the roads, so you don't pay the tax.

Its actually incredibly fair way to collect revenue.

Of course, don't get me started on how the money is spent, thats a whole other issue and giant mess.

  17. Uptown dad just shot himself due to his peeps defending sticker taxes.

In one hand he had the 75 dollar city sticker in the other his 78 dollar plate registration due 7/31. (His birthday was supposed to be on Monday)

He will be laid to rest in a giant pothole between Montrose and Irving on LSD.

Faint sound of taps playing in the background...

Good news is he should be back in full form for the Cubs game Wednesday.

  18. I don't want to open any can of worms - not my intention at all. I think the sticker is a waste, just something else to have to pay for. Many other people use the roads besides cars. People rollerblading and biking. It's just another fee the city charges so it can be squandered elsewhere.

  19. What if you live in Chicago part-time but have an out of state license plate?

Two weeks a month I travel to Indiana for 14 days at a time to take care of my grandmom, where my plates are registered. Will they ticket me anyways? How do they prove you live in the city full time?

  20. Its like the toll road system. Those who use them, pay for them. Those who don't, don't.

  21. I was at City Hall yesterday dropping off a letter to Alderman Reilly for work and low and behold, Alderman Schiller's office is right inside the lobby so I took a look-see... EMPTY... Like a museum after hours...

Additionally is it nonsense that i heard IL is the only state that requires cars to have city/town/village/etc. stickers? God I hope not...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Chicago (and Illinois) actually get off pretty cheap with the $75 city sticker and $78 plate sticker. Many other states charge a hell of a lot more for registration/tax/whatever they want to term it. Like everyone...not defending it as I am sure my property tax/sales tax/use tax/etc. make up for my 'cheap' stickers. You say potatoe, I say potato...

  23. it's just another way we get screwed by this great city that we love. i can say that b/c it's summer and i actually do love to see my tax $ in the planters downtown and in the parks (well some of them anyway) but it's a total scam. having a car in chicago is painful!
p.s. i'm trying to be as green as i can, but ever try to rollerblade or walk or ride your bike to work in december?

  24. I have a car under my husbands name and registered in Peoria,IL. We're separated now and I had just moved in the city like a week and a half ago. Do I need a city sticker? I remember about 2 years ago I was still living in the city and I was using a car that was registered under my aunt's name and it was registered in Libertyville,IL and I don't remember buying the city sticker at all. So do I need it even if it'll show that the car is registered in Peoria,IL when they run my plates?
