"Let Me Get That For You"

Be careful out there, folks!

Armed robbery reported in Uptown

Two men, one of them armed, robbed a couple walking on Clark Street in their Uptown neighborhood on the North Side late Sunday.

A 43-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were walking when about 11:15 p.m. they were robbed at the 4700 block of North Clark Street near the intersection of West Leland Avenue and North Clark Street, according to Town Hall District police Lt. Bob Kohnen.

The man and woman were walking only blocks from their apartment when two black males, both described as being about 20-years-old wearing black shorts and shoes and dark colored hoodies, asked the man for a light, apparently for a cigarette, according to Kohnen.

  2. Taking a casual walk around Evanston at 11:15 pm is risky enough.

In Rogers Park or Uptown, taking a casual walk should be completely out of the question--unless you're planning to rob someone yourself.

  3. Taking a casual walk in Uptown should not be out of the question. There are many people in our neighborhood trying to make it safe for all residents.

  5. This is a very busy area, with Carol's Pub at the intersection, so it is a surprise to hear of an armed robbery there. This is also only a block from the three people were shot in a car from a drive-by shooting. In the past, this has been a fairly calm and safe part of the Uptown area. Apparently that is changing...

  6. I was not being sarcastic. I agree Uptown and everywhere else should be safe, but presently it is dangerous to go out for a "casual walk" at 11:15 pm there and in many places in and around Chicagoland.

I recall a young Irish actor walking around late at night who was shot and killed point blank on Leland St. west of Clark several years ago. His killer(s) have never been apprehended.

If you want to walk around late at night, at least try to put up your guard and show that you're aware of your surroundings. In my younger years in Rogers Park, I sometimes had to park a block or two from my apt. I walked that distance constantly looking behind and around me to signal my awareness to anyone who might be scoping me out. And if youre out late and someone walks up to you and asks for "a light" or "the time," ignore them and keep walking.

  7. Good advice billyjoe.

This is where the advice to have a dog is some of the best advice you can accept navigating a neighborhood with criminal checkpoints.

  8. Well BillyJoe, you said that taking a walk SHOULD be completely out of the question.

How insane is that? I shouldn't be able to walk in my neighborhood? Are you sure your real name isn't Denise Davis?

  9. I saw these guys right before it happened. I'm calling 311/911.

  10. Gee Billy Joe, if Uptown is so unsafe, do you think there's anything an alderman could do to make it safer? Hey, how about sending a rep to our CAPS meetings? If this area is so dangerous at night, shouldn't Helen be doing something to make the area safer? Helen has been here 20 plus years in office and you're saying the area is still unsafe?

  11. I'm certain that the robbers were hiding behind the construction fence of the Vis Vitae project on that corner.

I passed one minute before the incident reported in the Sun-Times. I had my cell phone in hand (usually do) because it was late and I was alone. I heard voices behind the fence, and I believe one said, "No, wait." I consider myself lucky.

billyjoe was talking about "taking a walk at 11:15PM".

    Give him a break.

Once the sun goes down, criminals go on alert. Protect yourselves. Know where you are. Know your route. Know your escape routes.

  13. BB---great info. I would strongly suggest that you call the 19th District at 312.744.5983 and share your information.

  14. FOD, thanks. I did call and speak with an officer. My info. wasn't really of much help, as I didn't see the muggers, but I at least corroborated the victims' account of the incident (time, location, number of suspects, etc.).

  15. Does anyone have contact info for the Vis Vitae construction site? Security?

  16. I live on that block and walked my kid thru there several times yesterday. I was passed by cop cars at least 5 or 6 times within an hour. It looks as if police presence has been stepped up, but apparently, these robbers didn't care.

  17. Another reason why Chicago needs a conceal & carry law.

  18. I posted here before about the real issue of crime in Uptown. However, I was censored by the moderator. the truth is sometimes hard to handle.

I am now renaming Uptown as Lambs Farm. Where you go to find some sheep.

Keep living in your own worlds, oblivious to the real danger out there in our streets. You will all wake up soon enough and wonder where all the good people in our neighborhood went.

  20. I agree with ihatemondays. A conceal and carry law would be a good first step but it would only be a 1st step. What we really need is to get rid of the white t-shirt gang(s). Get rid of them and security would increase ten fold.

  21. I agree cowboy but what would happen to neighborhood "diversity."
Helen Schiller doesn't want to offend her base of food stamp residents.
