The Day After The Bullets Flew

A reader sent in this photo of the site of Tuesday's shooting, as it looked Wednesday: "The crime scene on Leland. Nomad. Is he the shooter or shootee? They are at least telling us this is the "'official site.'"

  1. This is not gang graffiti. This is a tagger marking.

  5. Let's also be clear that the location of this picture is not the location of Tuesday's shooting, albeit 1.5 blocks away. The location pictured here has been blocked with caution tape for weeks.

  6. Yep, this has been sitting on the sidewalk just east of Magnolia on Leland for at least a week now. Has something to do with the Darlington Hotel I think. I was curious what this was all about. Who knows, but this is not part of the shooting scene.

  7. Actually, there are bricks falling from the building above this pic. The tape (which a commenter has already pointed out) has been there for weeks and there is also a scaffolding directly behind the photographer where I hope "work" will commence soon. I assume the tape is there to keep us all from getting hit in the head with bricks while we are dodging bullets.

  8. So this "NOMAD" had tagged anything and everything in the area. I want to tag his face.

  9. Ok--for those of us who do not understand the difference--will someone kindly explain? "gang graffiti v tagger marking"? I have only lived in uptown a year--although it seems an unfortunate lifetime...

  10. Melissa - Gang graffiti is for communication within and among gangs, generally regarding territory. Every gang has its own specific symbols. For example, the Vice Lords control the Beacon/Leland area, so graffiti will include a five-pointed star or crown, a martini glass, top hat, or cane.
Tagging is grafitti not related to gang activity, and generally only communicates the artists name, or a symbol representing his or her name.
