A reader sent us this photo and tells us that this latest gang scribble was done last night. It's on the Silvia Center's north wall just above Ace-Hardware. It is clearly seen from the Wilson L stop. We need everyone to call 311 and report this. The operator will ask if the graffiti is more than 10 feet above the ground, which it is. The address of this location is 4615 N. Clifton. Get

Saw that this morning; I was wondering if I'd just missed it before. I went for the online 311 option here. I've used the website in the past and I've found the response to be as quick as calling the number. Something to consider for the more phone-shy readers.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate! That was super easy. I just made a request myself.
ReplyDeleteNice find on the 311 link. I just submitted the request.
ReplyDeleteBTW - If you leave your email, you can check the status of the request.
This 311 link has been on the right side of our "Useful Links" section for a long time. Check it out sometime. You might be surprised what we have linked to.
ReplyDeleteUgly vandalism? I agree. But "gang scribble"? Go to a CAPS meeting, talk with a law enforcement official and educate yourself on deciphering graffiti. Real gang scribble should be taken much more seriously and it pays to know the difference.
ReplyDeleteThe person who sent this in did so because she felt it was linked to the shootings and chase through Truman grounds last night.
ReplyDeleteI don't know gang graffiti myself and I didn't post the photo and blurb, but it seems like a good thing to get rid of, no matter what.

ReplyDeleteI have you on RSS feed, so I don't think I've ever even looked at the links. I'm happy to highlight how comprehensive your site is, though. ;)

ReplyDeleteToo bad the Streets and San Department doesn't take gang tags seriously. I spoke to Debbie Lopez and Asst. Comm. Bobbi Richardson and they say it is not their job to worry about who is doing the tagging or to try to identify patterns and prevent tagging.
ReplyDeleteI also found out that Police gang unit no longer keeps a database of taggers and gang tags.
No police strategy operating here.
In business we say people only manage what gets measured. So, as long as S&S gets rewarded on the measure of how much grafitti they remove why should they be proactive in catching taggers and preventing it? So long as tying tags to gang is just more paperwork for cops who enter data in the system but don't get credit for the crime later solved, why should they put forth that strategic effort?
"Real gang scribble should be taken much more seriously and it pays to know the difference."
ReplyDeleteThanks for that comment. I saw the graffiti and it registered to eyes more as "tagger" than "gang member." Not endorsing such scribblings, but people should try to get educated that there is a difference before re-enacting the story "Chicken Little."
Or, they should do what the cops say and "better be safe than sorry."
ReplyDeleteSomeone saw new graffiti in a place where there was a lot of gang activity, including a murder, and thought it was significant.
Calling them "Chicken Little" is smug and derogatory. At least the person took some action, whether or not the tagging meets "educated" standards.
And now its gone. Thanks for all the calls. Sometimes that wall gets tagged and it takes weeks to get it removed. Looks like someone higher up took this particular "tagging" seriously and wanted it gone.
ReplyDeleteI don't care who does the painting, its vandalism.
you would think that the places that are notorious for "tagging" like this building or the Uptown Theater which was clean up a while back, and then re-vandalized could maybe put up motion sensor lights that would brightly illuminate the "artists" when they climb up there to do their work.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a good job for Uptown United to pursue with their members. Perhaps they could even get a bulk discount on motion sensors.
ReplyDeleteNow if Uptown United would only get the grafitti removed off top of their own building at 4619 North Broadway the view would be clear looking both directions.
