This afternoon we came across this gentleman who had settled down in the bus stop at Broadway and West Sheridan, just in front of Gill Park and steps from the Hotel Chateau. He had a large bag of clothes in the bus stop with him and was chugging a couple beers. We called 911 and unfortunately after two calls, no police came to check this out. We heard him swearing at pedestrians passing by and carrying on conversations with no one. We wonder why this is allowed to continue steps from a children's
play lot.
Police didn't respond. Yep, that sounds familiar for any call related to prostitution, public urination, or drunk and disorderly in Uptown.
ReplyDeleteI thought Helen had big plans for redoing this park after the election. Not only is the park behind this guy but across the street is a grade school.
ReplyDeleteThere are frequently drunks at this bus stop. Right next to a park and a school. The Chateau is too close to both.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder why this is allowed to happen since the new Police Superintendent just made a big deal about giving serious attention to “Quality of Life Issues” and specifically mentioned public drinking, public urination and aggressive panhandling. Who wants to fire off a letter to him giving this specific example and the multiple calls to 911 that went unanswered.
ReplyDeleteThose new bus shelters make great lounge spaces for lowlife street trash. It's great to hear that the police are doing all they can to combat this activity.
ReplyDeleteThe last time Helen redid this park she had a mural installed on the brick wall facing the park's south lawn that was so pro-gang, so pro-violence, so pro-interacial hatred that it had to removed.
ReplyDeleteThat is how she wasted our taxpayer dollars. She has a long track record of taking any public funds allocated for community improvement and using them to make things worse or squandering them so that nothing can be improved.
After initial concerns regarding green space, Helen approved rezoning this bus shelter as outdoor space for Hotel Chateau.
ReplyDeleteAny pictures of this mural?

ReplyDeleteI would like to see this mural. I will ask as well, any pictures?

These are people.....This is the same attitude of the so called "liberals" in Uptown who promote the war in Iraq....more street trash over there....
Given their life circumstances you my friend would be what you call street trash too.
Back off....somebody drinking beer and mumbling to themselves is nothing...
Somebody breaking into your house is something...some corporation stealing from you with credit card interests rates, phony refunds, intentionally confusing directions so as to increase sales, somebody using your tax dollars to kill people in other countries...that's something.

ReplyDeleteSomeone has some anger - wow.
Street trash might be a bit harsh of a term I agree - but however I agree that loitering in public and drinking beer - not acceptable. Right where children are supposed to be able to play?! People fall on hard times, things happen, it's up to them to take care of their business - if you want to sit and drink beer, by all means do so, just not in a public place where children are. Allowing this behavior encourages more of it, and let's face it, we don't need it.
Just calling it like I see it. What term would you prefer? "Alcholically inclined with a propensity for homelessness?" Get over yourself.
ReplyDeleteBillyjoe, the people who run this blog actually have things to do besides check to see what group you're bashing today.
ReplyDeleteI'm sick of deleting your hate.
Play nice. Stop trolling.
I am sure if local residents could choose between a "lumpenproletariat pride" parade once a year with public displays of drunkenness (and whatever else)and such daily occurrences, most residents would choose the former.
ReplyDeleteBillyjoe, please stop trolling the blogs and get out there and do something about the state of affairs in Uptown and Rogers Park. Yes, poor people need a place to live. Yes, there are marginalized and disenfranchised people being treated like Sh** in this country and in Chicago. You guys need to reach out and get more support for people to get involved in these issues. The more you do your rabid attack dog thing on average citizens, the more you will piss people off and the pendulum will swing far right at the first opportunity.
Frankly, you lose all credibility unflinchingly backing Shiller, Moore and Daley. Since when does your kind support hegemonic power? Do you think we are all idiots? If you want a people's movement...make one! This city is one of the most segregated cities in the world and your kind's antics are just playing right into the hands of those who are all too happy to maintain the racial and ethnic divisions, redirect public resources to themselves and abandon any responsibilities towards the poor.
So, get off the blogs...stop with the pissing contests...and get out there and get angry and demand that more people pay attention to what is happening to the least of us. But when you do that, you will need to acknowledge your role in perpetuating and enabling the status quo and that it is coming from a "you're either with us or against us" stance. Your kind has made mistakes. So be it. Have the courage to be reflexive and to know that new approaches are not the same thing as defeat.

ReplyDeleteHmmmmm, sounds like I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't.

So what do you call illogical, shoot-from-the-hip criticisms of the regularly re-elected Ald Shiller?
all of the comments posted on here are always the same

it gets really boring to read the same comments all of the time: i could cut and paste the same comments in about 80% of the topics on here.
and i do agree with the majority of them -
just save your comments- we all know how you feel
One thing is for certain on this blog: "Anonymous" always gets the last word.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you mean by the damned if you do/damned if you don't comment. Real productive dialog that attempts to bridge divisions, heal this community and develop socially-responsible solutions to our pressing issues are desperately wanted.

ReplyDeleteI'm not playing your wide-eyed game. You're the master of trolling; stop it. Your sweeping generalizations and slurs against groups of people based on their gender, sexual orientation, and race certainly qualify.
I know you're capable of having discussions about issues without the slurs. Keep it to that.

Don't you understand that is the beauty of this blog, where a substantial amount of residents from the area can voice their feelings of frustration. I think that with over 200,000 web page hits, there must be at least one person, if not several people, from HS office that read this blog regularly. Whether they choose to act on or not (ahem..NOT), this site (and Uptown Crime Blotter) have been catalysts for change in the 46th, motivated by our community's frustration and desire for a safer, thriving neighborhood. Look at the press the Uptown has been getting lately, we're making our voices heard, and that's pretty freaking awesome.
I agree anonymous 3:37. I will keep saying what I have to say until someone listens or until enough people join me so that I don't have to keep repeating myself. Too bad someone is getting bored. There are much, much worse things in life than boredom.
ReplyDeleteHelen Shiller: sorriest excuse for a formerly 'radical' city council independent anyone could ever think up.
Wilson Yard: build true mixed-income housing and a vibrant retail environment. we'll all be happy.
stop labor ready: use TIF funds for job development, improve the public and private job rehabilitation resources we currently have but don't put a bad company in a bad location.
blah blah blah: listen to the community...stop being a hypocrite...crime exists so stop ignoring it...just because we are asking for change does not mean we are out to exterminate members of the community or that we are "haters"...I love Uptown and I want it to reach its potential instead of being mired in divisiveness and distrust.
Gee, I feel better. This should cover it for a while!
