Uptown Recycling Center On Sheridan For Sale

A reader sent in a pic of the Uptown Recycling Center at 4716 N. Sheridan Road that is now displaying a "FOR SALE" sign. A resident of the neighboring Par-Venu building mentioned to the photog that they thought the "Siam Cafe" Thai restaurant next door was also for sale. Interested parties can contact Wenger Properties at 773-252-8818.

  1. OH NO!!! I have been recycling here for years! I have so much enjoyed walking to the facility and doing my small part to try and do something good for the environment.

    This really stinks!

Anyone know why they are selling?

    DRAT!!!

  2. Two questions.

Where will all the smelly people with their shopping carts go to turn in the tin cans they get out of the dumpster?

Will this free up some parking in the neighborhood from the scrappers trucks?

  3. At our CAPS meeting, we learned the copper wire for the city street lights were getting stripped and sold there. Where will the robbers sell their stolen merchandise now?

I still hate to see it go.

  4. I love that recycling center. As far as I know, it is the only self-recycle place around except for in Evanston. Can it be saved somehow???

I live in a six-flat building so we don't get City garbage pick-up and can't participate in city recycling programs that are done via garbage pick-up. How are people supposed to recycle now?

Why is everything bad happening in Uptown all at once?

  5. If you are in a 6-flat, you can contact your trash collection company about getting a recycling container, then get a yearly rebate from the city. Or, for free, you can go to the drop-off centers (at Devon & Ravenswood, or near the Notebaert Nature Museum) and put everything (single-stream recycling) into the large blue containers. These are city-run and accept most recyclables, including several plastics, which as I recall was not donatable at the Uptown center.

  6. There is a new and great recylcling center at the Notebaert Nature Museum. They take plastic too.

  7. I know, but I very much liked walking over there and stopping into Cafe Too for a cup of coffee and/or a bite to eat. I have stopped going there after their support for Labor Ready and now the recycling center will probably close. An important part of my Uptown routine is now gone.

  8. There is a recycling drop-off center at 6441 N. Ravenswood next to the police station. Whenever I need something from Target (2112 W Peterson Ave) I make sure to bring my recycling too.

Here's a link to general info for City Chicago Recycling: Chicago Recycling

  9. My understanding are that the blue city recycling bins are public property and that we can dump our recyclables in to any city bin.

Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

  10. Any chance Shiller might be interested in helping save this recycling center? Environmentalist liberal yuppies like me go there as well as homeless people who can turn in bottles and cans for a bit of spare change. It really has a community purpose for a wide group of people. We could even put up awnings and have nicer recycling containers. There are a whole bunch of ways we could use this space as a community.

Saving this recycling center would be in line with her agenda and it would also make some of the property owners happy. I am sure she finds us a tough crowd to deal with these days. I hope the people she has "tooling around" read this.

  11. I stopped going to Cafe Too because of the Labor Ready support, as well. I used to go several times a week to write and have lunch. I hope they're reading this.....

  12. NO.... Not the Siam Cafe too. No more lunchtime buffet. We are losing our best Thai places that Uptown is known for. Pretty soon we'll have to travel to Western Avenue to get decent Thai.

  13. I'm sorry to be losing the Thai place next to the recycling center. It was the first place I ever went in Uptown when I moved here. My new neighbors took me out for a "welcome to the 'hood" meal.

But -- there's VERY decent Thai at Thai Uptown (or Uptown Thai?) right across from the Wilson el station on Broadway. Cheap, tasty and a mom-n-pop with friendly service. It's my new favorite place.

  14. Had lunch at Siam Cafe today with 15 Buddist Monks and their entourage present. Lord, I'm gonna miss that place. Another table was reminiscing about their first location that opened in the 1970's that was located just one block South where the other Thai Noodle place is now.

The owner seemed to indicate that the Siam Cafe would still be around somewhere but also said he was getting old. So, it is hard to say what will happen to this little Uptown gem.
