Thai Grocery Closing

A reader sent in the following sad news about an Uptown business:

"Our beloved Thai Grocery at 5014 N. Broadway is closing for retirement on April 29, 2008. This favorite of hungry locals, Thai immigrants, foodies, yelp, and local and national food columnists has been a staple on Argyle in Uptown’s New Chinatown area for 34 years. For authentic Thai food, this was the place to go for authentic ingredients and cooked carry-outs from the back counter. We’ll miss you little one."

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOO!

That's the best place around to get thai veggies and a full array of thai sauces.

Besides the Chinese grocery store in the strip mall and the Thai store near Silver Seafood (not very good as far as veggies go) -- anyone have any recommendations on where else to go around town if one has a need for Thai eggplant, holy basil or Kafir leaves?

  2. If we're lucky, it'll be a Coldstone Creamy adjacent to a Caribou Coffee.
But realistically, it'll be nothing for years.

  3. Coldstone or Caribou compared to an independently owned ethnic grocery store or maybe an interesting restaurant like we see elsewhere on Broadway (Tank, Demera, Ba Le, Fat Cat, Marigold spring to mind)?

For great ice cream, try Sweet Occasions on Clark in Andersonville; for coffee shops... take your pick of 10 non-chains around the area.

Someone may need seriously need to consider moving to the Suburbs.

  4. anon 12:49, i am afraid you fell for that old snide Uptown humor. i think that person was joking and shares the same sentiments you do.

although if everyone moves to the suburbs, property values will go down and Shiller won't have any money in her TIF and rents will be affordable again and she can relive her youth one more time before she passes the torch to Brendan so that he can start from scratch again and really keep the yuppies out.

yep...that was more snide Uptown "humor" if I may flatter myself.

  5. as the original coldstone poster, yes, i was joking. half joking about the fact that coldstone sucks and i wouldnt want one near me, but at the same time, making a comment that having a coldstone would probably mean that shiller was no longer the alderbeast. craptastic either way...

  6. I know this is a little off topic, but does anyone know what is going on at Delray Farms at Foster and Broadway?
There are construction signs and a fence around it.

  7. Re: Delray Farms -
Looks like a permit was issued to change the sign to CVS Pharmacy according to the Dept. of Building Permits. Odd that a CVS would go there since they are part owners of Jewel-Osco (just a block away).

  8. Jewel Osco is not at all owned by CVS. In 2006 when Albertsons sold itself off in pieces, it sold Jewel/Osco to Supervalue. In order to get regulatory approval of the transaction, Jewel/Osco had to sell off all free standing Osco stores to CVS.

  9. Hey 'coldstoners" any real answers here? - Where to get kaffir lime leaves, thai basil and eggplants once they are gone? I've been shopping here for years, especially for the fresh sprouts, firm tofu and other fixings for pad thai....

  10. Why not ask the retiring owners where they recommend you shop? Surely they know the competition....

  11. How about shopping online: http://www.templeofthai.com
