Caught In The Net

We have noticed that the Salvation Army at Broadway and Sunnyside has been covered in a black netting for a long time now. If you happen to walk by, you can see that some residents have tossed shoes and other belongings out of the window and are trapped in the netting below. What is the netting for? Any ideas?

  1. i think that the black netting indicated that the facade is deteriorating. The netting is thus used to catch the falling pieces.

  2. The net is to catch shoes and belongings, obviously.

  3. I'm not sure. What I can tell you is that the shoes wouldn't be the work of "residents" unless the mesh predates this past summer.

The shelter has been shut down.

  4. Anon at 3:24 is correct. The netting is to catch potential falling pieces of masonry. I doubt the shoes were thrown out the window, but rather fell when they were placed on the windowsill to dry during the winter months. Shoes are at a premium for the homeless.

The Salvation Army no longer has a shelter but it continues to operate as a congregate feeding site, as well as a day time drop-in center, and it provides case management services.

  5. When did the Salvation Army discontinue the Shelter operation at this site? Where are the gentlemen who used to live their sheltered now? What was the reason for the shelter operation shut down? Just curious.
