And The Walls Came Tumbling Down

A reader sent in this photo and question:  "Monday afternoon I saw construction work being done on Montrose, just east of Hazel.  I took the following picture.  A building was torn down.  I was wondering if anyone knows what will be built in its place."  Anyone?

  1. Let's see, there's the Food Town, a nail or hair salon and perhaps one more business that I cannot remember. My take is if it wasn't memorable then this should be a good thing. Perhaps a shiny new building with commercial promise? Maybe a few new condos with rich dog owners that will lie about stuff on UU and feed their pets gallons of water as to ruin the neighborhood with dog pee...

ha, sounds like a movie featuring Johnny Depp or something.

  2. Maybe they could tear down the SRO across the street while they are at it.

  3. Was that the old beauty shop next to food town ?

  4. No, the beauty shop is still there - it's part of the same building Food Town is in. Looks like what was torn down was "Emmanuel Church of God" - some old store front "church" with no windows, just a gated over door. I always wondered if that place was actually operating or just sitting there abandoned. Guess it was the latter.

  5. Dan is correct. Maybe it'll be a new social service agency. We need more of those in Uptown.

  6. How about another currency exchange? Or Internet cafe? Or payday loan service? Or store that specializes in selling apparel with huge dollar signs on it?

    Here's a potential customer!

  8. After all the snarky, sarcastic remarks about the people and business's in Uptown, it makes me wonder, why do some of you even live here? Hearing the same old 'please not another beauty shop or liquor store' comment is getting really old. When I first read UptownUnity's comment I was a bit put off, but by the end of all the other comments I couldn't agree with the sentiment more...."Maybe a few new condos with rich dog owners that will lie about stuff on UU and feed their pets gallons of water as to ruin the neighborhood with dog pee..."

  9. Chi Town Philly, not to be speaking for Uptown Unity, but I believe she was being sarcastic and referencing a certain "Troll" UPTOWN's posts from a previous page.

People are sick of the same repetitive businesses, but I do agree that some "dreams," or "hopes" for the space may be a better way to "waste" time posting.

  10. I agree with ChiTownPhilly... I'm glad people are being constructive... yikes.

  11. My guess is....absolutely nothing goes there for a while.
But why would they tear it down? Some may ask.

Because if you can't lease it, can't sell it, and ya can't maintain it.

Tear it down! Why? Go do your homework...it happens all the time.

The SRO jokes are well.....kinda lacking in originality at this point, but if it floats your boat go sail it.

  12. Matthew Lesko! I used to see this clown on TV all the time wearing that suit with the question marks all over it, talking about all the free things you can get from the government.

  13. ChiTownPhilly (UptownUnity also if not sarcasm)

I pick up hennesy, natty light and wildwood soda empties, broken glass, little baggies (for beads), empty salem packs and butts, flaming cheetos and every hostees wrapper imaginable each and everyday while WALKING MY DOGS.

~Their are shootings, graffiti, bangers slinging dope, HUMAN BEINGS urinating and deficating in the alleys but hey your right Uptown is a total disaster because of dog pee!!!

  14. You dont have to love the local blah culture of low end food stores and the like to want to live in uptown.

Uptown wasnt built to be a dump,
yet here we are so so so many years later and there is too much violence and too much poverty.

Culture Clash big time going on right now.

But Im for Uptown continuing to rise up from the "ashes" to become a more respectable, safe, interesting part of town.

    Crime is interesting on TV
but not on in your own neigborhood.

  15. It's going to be a parking lot for the residents of the building next door.

  16. ChiTownP - How dare you point out a flaw in the UU. The chosen who get to post (even a Troll) are the voice of Uptown (meaning UU). I agree, but I do not expect my post to ever see the light of day. Its great to know that even a Troll has been knighted by the UU God of Uptown. Now thats community for ya.

Even Uptown Pit can post damn near racist remarks and get posted. Add that to file

A parking lot would be a good thing. It will do more good than empty retail.
