Brawl At Carol's Pub

A reader sends us this info:
"An officer claimed that there was a very bad brawl between some guys at Carol's Pub. A small section of Clark has been closed off on Leland and Clark.

However, for a "bad fight", the cops have been hanging around for quite some time. At least 8 cop cars are present."

Update via Chicago Breaking News:
A 27-year-old man was critically stabbed in an Uptown bar fight Wednesday evening, police said this morning. The presumed assailant is in custody.

The man was stabbed in the stomach and thigh about 7:30 p.m. at Carol's Pub, 4659 N. Clark St., said Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.

The victim was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, he said.

Update 9/8:  The Sun-Times says a patron who had been banned from Carol's got into a drunken fight with a father and son team, who stabbed and clubbed him.  He is fighting for his life.

  1. As a huge fan of Carol's & Country...in the imortal words of David Allan Coe...

"Country DJ's knows that I'm an outlaw.
They'd never come to see me in this dive.
Where bikers stare at cowboys who are laughen' at the hippies.
Who are prayen' they'll get out of here alive.

The loud mouth in the corner's gett'en to me.
Talking about my earrings and my hair.
I guess he ain't read the sign that says I've been to prison.
Someone ought to warn him, before I knock him off his chair."

Moral of the story is to mind yer manners.

  2. I get a tear in my beer every time I hear this story.
The police need to respond overwhelmingly to barroom brawls just for their own safety.
What with all the "kickin' and a gougin' in the mud the blood and the beer", As the great Johnny Cash sang.
A drunk and bothered patron or two can be every bit as dangerous as a wild bear.
If Johnny Cash were still with us today and wrote a song about Carol's Pub I wonder how it would go.....

Carol's Pub needs to slow down those pitchers of cheap beer before the revelry turns to rabble-rousing.

  4. There were easily 30 police officers on scene. Clark St. was blocked off from Lawrence to Wilson. I seriously have never seen that many officers in one place at a time. It was overkill (no pun intended) of the police presence.

From what I gathered, a brawl started and spilled out on the street. Someone got knifed. There was some media on the scene saying that they had suspect in custody. The stabbing took place directly next to Chava Cafe.

  6. A bar fight escalates into a brawl which escalates into a stabbing and you think the police response was overkill?

Your assessment of police "overkill" is, of course, based on your decades of law enforcement experience?

I'd much rather have too many cops on the scene and have some have to leave after they get there- and more importantly all of them all go home safe- versus the alternative if there aren't enough.

  8. The Tribune is reporting a person stabbed and offender in custody.

I love how Clark and Leland is labeled "Uptown" when something bad happens, but distances itself when there is good news to report...

Carol's can be a very fun bar, but I am curious to hear what others right on the block think about them as a neighbor and Uptown citizen.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

For those of you waxing poetic, this victim is in critical condition, which means he is on the verge of death. To you and Major Asshole, consider yourself lucky that you "have never seen that many officers in one place at a time". That means you are in a better area of the city. That kind of police activity is common on the south and west sides where "real" gangs shoot and kill people with little regard of the consequences and scenes like the one at Carol's Pub play out daily and routinely.

Regarding the abundance of officers, don't be fooled, the CPD is dangerously shorthanded. This kind of violent call is a Priority 1 call and is normally simulcast on citywide Police radios. That means that any units in the area (ie. Canine, Detectives, etc) may hear it and respond. Also, Clark St is the dividing line between the 023rd and 019th Districts and they are on the same radio zone and officers regularly assist each other on the district border. Not to mention that Carol's is ALSO 1 block south of the border between 023 and 020.

  12. The Suntimes has a different take:

Two staffers of a popular Uptown neighborhood dive bar are being questioned after a patron was stabbed during a brawl at the establishment Wednesday night on the North Side.

At 7:33 p.m. the 48-year-old intoxicated customer got into a fight with two employees inside Carol’s Pub, 4659 N. Clark St., according to police.

The fight continued outside the bar where responding officers found the 48-year-old man, suffering from three stab wounds, police said.

An ambulance was called and the customer, who lives in the area, was transported in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was listed in “stable” condition early Thursday, according to police.

A 68-year-old man and a 28-year-old man who are listed as offenders in the police report are being questioned early Thursday, but have not been charged. They were not hospitalized.

There were other witnesses to the fight and police said they are trying to determine who was the aggressor.

It was not known what the weapon was or if it was recovered.

  14. I was on the scene and detectives were interviewing several witnesses who saw what happened (some were standing right there at the bus stop at Clark/Leland.)

Witnesses claim the victim was immediately kicked out of the bar before having a drink or saying a word. Supposedly he has a history with the Pub and isn't welcome inside.

The fight took place right outside Carol's entrance (not across the street at the Cafe). It involved two Carol's employees (father & son???) and the victim. The victim walked across the street after being stabbed (blood everywhere)before collapsing outside the cafe.

Witnesses were claiming that one of the Carol's employees (younger of the two) stabbed the victim more than once outside the Pub.

I'm not sure what happened inside, but sounds like it was a bit irrational on the employee part to be stabbing customers. It's dumb - and bad for business. Call the police next time.

  16. A hard lesson is about to fall upon the two employees and it does not sound like they can claim self defense.

    Anyone know them?

  17. Big City Police (Ret.)

What the hell is wrong with this world when citizens complain about too many cops showing up to what might turn into a homicide scene????? I guess it's classic to complain about police not being around...only to bitch when there are too many of them in one location. It's pathetic....Good job CPD...Despite that A-Hole J-Fed and being short hundreds of officers.

  18. I know a couple of the workers there and they seem legit. There is constantly a "homeless" problem there. A bunch of bums have tried to come in...only to get turned down. At least one of them have become really aggressive in the past.....UNK if it has anything to do with this.

  19. I'll preface the following statement by saying I love the police, I am glad they protect me every day and I wish I had the cajones to do their job.

That being said, the idiocy in the comments is awesome. I said there were too many police officers there WELL after the crime had been committed, the victim was hauled away and the suspects were in custody. It was over. We're talking 20-30 minutes after. It made no sense.

I just find it interesting that they were all there for the knifing at a shithole bar, but after a shooting, it's a ghost town.

I look forward to the comments slamming me and taking all reason & logic out of the equation.

  20. Alot of the bars have a button behind the bar that alerts police very fast-it is usually used for robberies.Maybe why so many came so fast -not sure.Just hope the guy pulls thru.I remember that place yrs. ago-it was called Pams then.Usually worse that would happen is a couple guys on the street duking it out-no knifes-no guns .

  21. @ Major Asshole

You watch too many police shows on TV, my friend. TV is the only place where "it was over" once "the victim was hauled away and the suspects were in custody". Fact of the matter is, these are intricate, time consuming investigations. Evidence must be roped off, protected and preserved for the arrival of detectives and evidence techs, and then properly collected and inventoried for further analysis and/or presentation in criminal court. The processing must be accurate and thorough or criminals may not be convicted.

Besides the obvious need to interview witnesses from every part of the incident, ie. inside the bar, outside the bar, or patrons of nearby establishments, a parallel investigation must also be conducted because the bar is a "licensed premise". This requires locating, collecting and recording ALL license and permit numbers of which there can be 10 or more (food, liquor, entertainment license for live bands, separate amusement licenses for juke boxes, pinball machines, pool tables etc.). If ANY of these are not purchased or expired, they must be cited for each separate violation and assigned a hearing date.

When you say "it made no sense", it is painfully obvious that you are speaking from a platform of zero police training, knowledge or experience. I'm not trying to pile on here, Mr. Asshole, but cops get a regular diet of uninformed citizens expressing their "knowledge" of what police work is supposed to be and, once again, you've come up short.

Thanks for this, though "I'll preface the following statement by saying I love the police, I am glad they protect me every day and I wish I had the cajones to do their job."

  22. It's fairly clear that "Major Asshole" is an aspiring troll.

My suggestion is that folks just ignore him. Perhaps if we do he will go away. Disappear into nothing but distant echo of memory.

Sorta like Helen Shiller come next May.
