Why We Love Uptown

A reader sends us her photos from this weekend at Montrose Harbor. Check out the folks in the background snowboarding! How many other neighborhoods in Chicago have that? You can check out more snowy Montrose Harbor photos here.

  1. Actually, there are lots of places to sled all over Chicago. Two that come immediately to mind are the sled run in Warren Park in Rogers Park. Another decent one is located between Soldier Field and McCormick Place.

Due to its location near Montrose Harbor and near the lakefront, Cricket Hill (shown in this post), is merely the most visible.

  2. billyjoe, maybe you should go to Cricket Hill and remind everyone there about this fact. Isn't Cricket Hill reserved for Hemp Fest? Go get 'em, tiger!

There also ought to be a couraj and jpusa protest, or an ONE candlelight vigil or something. Those evil kids are making Uptown less affordable and raising the price of weed for everyone all over the city.

The outrage! It's practically Nazi Germany on that hill right now.

  3. Yes, we can always count on billyjoe to chime in with a formulaic comment discounting anything positive posted in these forums.

  4. Yeesh Zesty . . . . COURAJ? JPUSA? You're free associating more than you're making any sense.

As for "Hemp Fest?": What a joke of a fest. It used to be one could actually smoke weed at that event. Now the Chicago cops are crawling all over it, eager to bust anyone who even looks like they might be ready to light up a pipe or joint.

  5. billyjoe, I didn't expect you to understand.

Your in depth knowledge of Hemp Fest, however...Priceless!

  6. It's amazing how the trolls complain there is nothing positive on UU and when they run something that is, there are either no comments, and no one remembers it, or it is turned into a negative by the trolls. Unbelievable. Let's get back on subject.

  7. Not to worry, MaldenMan: Caring Neighbor (or another one of the Uptown Update censors) will soon swoop down to erase any comments they deem offensive.

Go sledding at Cricket Hill. By the time youre finished, so will be the comments.

  8. Sledding???!

I'm not leaving my computer...watching billiejoe squirm is much more fun than any sledding adventure.

  9. Sledding on Cricket Hill is the best family activity in Uptown during winter. How can you beat free, fun & nearby?

Our family is so thankful for all of the happy memories we have made there.

  10. I think BJ's comments give the site some balance. After all, he was just stating the truth.

  11. I, too, read nothing negative in Billy Joe's comments. I took it as an expansion of the greatness of Uptown and showing us that the entire city has wonderful, family-friendly activities all over.

Maybe those of you who read something negative did so because that is all you are capable of reading and seeing. You should get out more.

  12. Love Uptown because I love the smell of urine and funk in the morning........

  13. A little perspective... the post asked "how many neighborhopods..." and bj answered. Granted the OP implied there were few. BJ offered 2, which out of 50 wards (and even more neighborhoods", would support the OP's position. Also granted, BJ's generally snarky, buzz-kill, demeanor hasn't won him any friends. (No matter what positive words have ever been uttered on this board, BJ can find a way to belittle them.)

  14. Well, you cannot single out BJ for being snarky on this site, people are snarky on a regular basis. Even UU posts some snarky items.

Snarky comes off as childish to me, but whatever. I am sure I do it also.

  15. Just out of curiousity... I notice BJ's last comment has been deleted. Did UU do that or did BJ? If UU did, why? I didn't see anything threatening or particularly offensive in it.

  16. Who cares if BJ did or UU did. He can turn anything positive into a negative in 5 seconds. BTW, how did a post about sledding and wintertime activities get hijacked so quickly?

  17. Well, with all due respect, that seems to happen alot.

  18. Snow on Cricket Hill,
    Icy-kissed smiles speeding by,
    Sparkling Uptown joy.

  19. Snowy (and hopefully even FUN) activities at Montrose Harbor for FREE, sounds great to me. Nice to get out into the fresh air for a bit. Thanks for passing the word on!

  20. I grew up in Uptown and lived there from the early '60's 'til late 80's.Now live in NWI and almost brought the crew to Cricket Hill last weekend to sled but opted for something close..next time we're comin' down! Hell, I played baseball for St.Gregory H.S. and we had our home games there where I played right field half way up Cricket Hill! I used to party on Simmons Drive" The Hill" and made Margate Park my home back in the day! RIP Gil!
