Got Air Horn?

Are you hearing air horns all night recently and cursing Harpo Marx as you toss and turn? Turns out there's track work being done in the wee hours on the Red Line. The air horn sounds when there's a train approaching to warn the workers to get out of the way.

You won't sleep any better, but at least now you know why you're being kept awake.

  1. The noise means that good things are happening and the tracks are being repaired to let the trains go faster. I'm fine with it. If I wanted pure peace and quiet I would have bought a house in Iowa.

  2. The nightly repairs to the Red line through Uptown and Edgewater are not on the tracks, they are replacing the platform roofs at Wilson, Argyle and Berwyn right now. They have been power blasting the many paint layers on the metal supports, then they install new metal roofing. Finally they apply a spray coat of paint to the roof and the metal supporting structure. It appears they are also upgrading/cleaning all the florescent light fixtures as well.

There is only one slow zone area left in Uptown at the moment on the Red line tracks that is there due to track conditions and not curves (such as at Montrose). It is in both directions between Wilson and Lawrence. The CTA does have plans to address all slow zones on Red from Addison to Lawrence scheduled for the next year.

  3. Thanks Anon 5:43. Either way, that sound is of CTA improvements and I would imagine it's fairly temporary.

  4. Does anyone know when all the work on the red line will be done? The slow zones are killing my morning commute.

  5. While they are replacing the canopies, can they clean up all the trash on the roof of the Lawrence station (as you are walking up the stairs to the platform? Some of the trash looks like it has been there for years. Not real inviting when getting on or off the El. Just a thought.
