Man Shot, Killed in Sheridan Park, Gang Involvement Suspected (Updated)

A few minutes after 6pm, readers started letting us know about a volley of shots near Racine and Leland. A man was shot in the chest and later died after being brought to Illinois Masonic. Cars in the area also sustained damage from the shots, as did at least one residence.

Witnesses report that a young male, 15-17 years old, fired the shots, then fled on foot.

Ald. Cappleman tweeted: "Person killed just after 6pm today on the 1200 block of W Leland. Appears gang-related. Officers from other districts now in area. Please call 911 for any suspicious activities. Call 312-744-8261 if you have info about this crime."

Due to possible retaliation, please keep an eye out for any situations that seem to have the potential to escalate and call 911. We will post any updated we receive.

Update: CWB Chicago has identified the victim as Deshawn Markiese Johnson, age 18.

  1. Check Snack 4 Less on Wilson or that minimart in strip mall at Wilson and Magnolia. No doubt he is there or at his Mom's subsidized apartment on Malden where no questions are ever asked. Cappleman and Rahm need to drop the hammer on all public housing in Uptown. It is the source of all of this. That corner is a hot spot because of its proximity to bum motels. Bangers are fighting for the right to sell to the degenerates. My guess is Malden Arms next. I see drug deals there every day, and call the cops everyday. I call Malden Arms too. Status quo is too compelling for the admin so they turn a blind eye.

    1. You're echoing everything I've been saying for the past few years (since I've become heavily involved/invested in Uptown).

The unbelievably disproportionate amount of SROs and subsidized apartment complexes are driving the issues.

  2. I will say it again. It is only going to get worse, not better. Quit trying to fool yourselves.Thank God no innocent people where hit by these losers.Remember it is not gangbangers selling to gangbangers. They are selling to our neighbors, suburbanites and possibly our friends. You never know. But it is not to each other. That is why they are shooting. Now there is MORE customers and money.

  5. Aren't we blessed to live in a city where our mayor, councilman, state rep, and state senator believe it is more important to be a sanctuary city safe haven for illegal immigrants instead if keeping federal funding to keep AFT and other federal agents fighting this kind of crime in our neighborhood. I guess we get to be the sacrificial lambs for what THEY BELIEVE is the better good.

    1. That's your takeaway? If federal funding for crime fighting is your concern, maybe you should, I dunno, point your finger at the folks that are threatening to hold those dollars hostage instead.

    2. Nope, I'll keep pointing my finger right where the blame belongs. What idiocy, intentionally giving up federal crime fighting funds in a city with 600 murders so far this year and nearly 800 last year.

  6. No, the problem was and is the former Mayor tore down all the Projects and scattered all the criminals and gangs across the city and mixed them up together. NOt SRO's

  7. God this is tragic. I used to see this kid on Wilson all the time. At the very least, I hope that this will serve as a wake up call to his friends...but I can't say that I'm optimistic.
