Chuckman's Nostalgia page has a great photo from the 1930s showing 4 young women walking down Lawrence just outside the Aragon Ballroom. Most everything still stands in the photo besides the gas station on the right (now parking for the Aragon) and the barely visible "Ilfracombe Apartments" on the SE corner of Lawrence and Kenmore.
