Gerber Building Now Nothing But A Shell

The CTA has made quick work of gutting the Gerber Building, leaving just the exterior terra cotta clad walls and the roof support beams. Braces are up around the entire exterior to support the walls now that the roof has been removed. We are guessing that getting a roof back on before the snow flies will be a priority.

  1. Any ideas what the space will be used for once the restoration/renovation is complete?

  2. That will depend on what CTA does to prepare the building for use, and what business(es) want CTA as a landlord. When the public meetings took place, Cappleman suggested that it be re-used for something like a French market, but time will tell.

    1. Thanks for your response. I'm not sure Uptown is quite ready for a French market type concept, but whatever goes in there cannot be a repeat of the junk on the other side of Broadway. It needs to be a destination--something that draws people to Uptown. What that is, I do not know.

And I hope some developer has his eyes fixed on that gawd awful strip mall on the southeast corner.

    2. Have you seen the clientele shift at places like Aldi lately? I'd say we're more than ready for a French market.

  3. I'd love to see a market similar to what is at the Sheridan stop. Fresh fruit and veg and basic, last minute supplies for dinner or parties. That would be the most useful and get the most bang for the buck in my opinion.
This would eliminate a trip down the block to Aldi or Target and waiting in long lines when you only need a few things.

...And a walk-up coffee window. I love D&Ds concept at Belmont.

    1. I really like your suggestion. I used to live off the Sheridan stop and loved having a fruit and vegetable place nearby to pick up things after work.
