Two Shot On Sheridan, Woman Dies, Bystanders To Gang Drive-By

Today around 3:30pm, shots rang out at on the 4500 block of Sheridan. Two rival gangs were shooting at each other, according to police, and two bystanders, a man and a woman, both age 58, were caught in the crossfire.

Ald, Cappleman sent out a newsletter:
"This afternoon, a 58 year old Hispanic man and a 58 year old Caucasian woman who were both bystanders, were shot at the corner of Windsor and Sheridan in what police describe as a gang-related shooting. Video footage from a police camera (placed there last year) will be reviewed to capture the person responsible for this senseless act.

As I've said before, I'm asking all residents to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity that they believe needs immediate attention by the police. Even if you're not sure about making a call, it's fine to call 911 and let the operator assess what the next steps should be.

There are things we all can do to address the culture of violence we see today in Chicago and across this nation. First and foremost, we must pressure our federal and state legislators to pass gun law reform; the ease of access to guns is appalling and our elected leaders MUST do everything possible to place more restrictions on gun access.

This Friday, I will be joining others to commemorate the work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and a group of 700 civil rights activists, religious leaders, and courageous community members who marched across the city to Chicago's Marquette Park where they confronted thousands of violent protesters who hurled rocks, bottles at them. We must continue that message of peace."
Both victims were taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, and the blog Crime In Boystown reports that the woman has died of her injuries. We don't have her name, but CWB reports she lived on the 4500 block of Broadway. The man was shot in the leg and is expected to recover.

CWB says, "Witnesses told police that a newer, black 4-door Toyota sedan rolled up Sheridan around 3:20PM and a man opened fire from the rear right passenger window."

With the shooting on Friday morning, shots fired around Wilson/Broadway yesterday evening around 7:30, and today's shooting, something has the gangs in an uproar. It is a tragedy that two people who were apparently not involved in the gangs' idiotic behavior were shot because of it.

Our deepest condolences to the people mourning their friends.

Update: The woman who was killed is Penny Gearhart. She was a StreetWise vendor, a familiar face at Inspiration Cafe, and a grandmother. May she rest in peace.

  1. We need more under cover police in this area .This is now going on in the daytime.Kids will be going back to school next month they will also be in arms way.

  2. Bobbie what will undercover cops do? We need more uniformed officers. Unfortunately Rahm and his puppets ( Capelman) have made it tough for LEO to do their jobs. They also keep refusing to allocate budget for more officers.

  3. We need to bring back stop and frisk, and get the guns off the street. I was reading in the Trib that the there are a lot of "luxury" car thefts by gang members - mainly from the burbs - and they use those cars to commit drive by. Makes sense, because the car if caught on camera would trace back to the rightful owner. Why use YOUR car to shoot at someone and risk getting YOUR car shot up in return?
More officers won't make a difference. We need better & more surveillance cameras. Every business up and down major commercial streets should have surveillance cameras as a deterrent. Detroit businesses were mandated to have surveillance cameras or pay a fine. The police need technology to help solve the crimes and get the violators off the streets. Also, please do not vote Judge Luckman back in office!

  4. Just recently (last Sun.) I was by that very same corner when I called 911 because there was this person acting erratically, obviously there was some kind of mental illness going on. I called twice and waited over an hour for police to respond. All the while she was stopping traffic mumbling incoherently and acting very bizarre. I even saw police in one of those big SUV's drive by and not do anything. What I'd like to know is who do we call when 911 doesn't respond to calls for help??

  5. Unfortunately, I don't think that either more undercover or uniformed officers are the answer. The gangbangers are bold and they don't value life. More police and stricter gun legislation are good measures, but the root of the gang problem is a host of societal ills--parenting, crime-ridden neighborhoods, poor schools, lack of job opportunities and after-school and summer programs, and the drug trade. An intensive focus on and remediation of these issues is what we need. I just read in Crain's that very few CPS schools have a corporate partner. This is due to the CPS bureaucracy, not the lack of interest from corporations. Things like exposing kids to successful mentors and worthwhile activities early on and with consistency will do a lot more than just putting more six-figure cops on the corners. A police state is not the solution....

  6. Gun law reform will do nothing - it's not like the gang bangers follow the rules - obviously the gun laws we already have in Chicago have not worked

    1. I agree, the problem is that in about 80% of the homicides no one is charged. Why are so many of these shooters are getting away with it? The shooters have to be caught and put away for a long long time. In Florida just the possession of a gun while committing battery is mandatory 10 year sentance.

  7. Bobbie, kids are already in harms way. The shooting at Leland and Winthrop the other day literally took place in front of a daycare and a bullet went through the 2nd floor window of their building. Meanwhile, 1 block away at Astor Park there were over 20 TODDLERS playing from 2 other daycares. The daycare teachers enacted safety measures and called 911 for a police escort from the park or some sort of all-clear and NO ONE came. So as far as I'm concerned, kids are already at risk and the police still don't care.

  8. I've lived in Uptown now for a month and have rarely seen any police patrolling the area. Perhaps the lack of police presence is allowing these thugs to do what they want. Seems as if CPD just hides now so they don't end up in a situation with the media.

  9. I am afraid these shootings are done for sport. A car is stolen, then these guys go out for a night on the town with the intention of shooting someone for kicks. It's not gang related. The people shot on Sheridan were a homeless woman recently arrested for shop lifting according to second city cop and a hispanic man. They say the hispanic man was a gang member, but not the intended target. That doesn't make sense. He's 58 and a gang member?

The shooting on Leland and Winthrop I witnessed. Shots were fired randomly, one on the second floor of christopher house, another into a tire on a car, the other grazed a man's shoulder. It was a rental car with pennsylvania plates.

Whats going on is, it's done for kicks, in my opinion. We don't get any information after the fact. Why is that? Why isn't motive discussed? Who are the shooters? What cars did they drive. The car was video taped by a witnessl.

But we get no information from the police. Why is that?

Chaos. The gangs are broken down, there is no control over them by leaders of gangs according to a recent report in the Tribune. Alderman used to be able to talk to gang leaders. Not anymore. They are roving bands of guys looking for kicks, and that's killing somebody.

That's what I think is going on.

  10. Gang members don't make any goddamn money! What do you think people in a gang do? Sell drugs, for small change and sit around drinking wine and chesse, smoking dope and talking trash, listening to music and bragging.

Gang members are kids and do kids stuff. They do stuff your not supposed to do and get a THRILL out of doing it. Today the thrill is shooting people.

58 year old people don't have the feelings emotionally or the physicality of teen agers and 20 year olds. If they are part of a gang, it's in a passive way, a permissive way, they don't hang out with teens, steal cars, etc. If they do anything illegal it's for a specific personal reason out of perceived necessity.

The woman and man shot on Sheridan are now described as a quiet good people. Hispanic men generally do not belong to the disciples or stones.
