Magnolia Cafe Burglarized, Closed While Investigation Continues

We've been getting a lot of inquiries about what's going on with the Magnolia Cafe on Wilson, which has had this sign on the door for the past week.

Kaz, the owner, posted today on UU's Facebook page, "Place was burglarized and completely stripped of everything sept 1st-dealing with detectives-several witnesses."

What a shame. Magnolia Cafe has been an anchor of Wilson Avenue since 2001, when very few others were willing to make an investment in Uptown.  We hope to see them open again soon.

  1. Somebody told me they were going out of business.

  2. It's happening a lot in Lakeview too. Lots of businesses getting robbed.

  3. Sorry to hear this as well. I really like that place. I've been there a few times since my recent move to Uptown.

I'm curious as to the damage. Was the booze cleared out? It's hard to imagine someone wanting to rob a kitchen. I'm pretty sure spatulas and saute pans don't command high dollar on streets.

  4. This really is too bad as I love that place and have been there many, many times over the years. I am a bit confused though as another reader pointed out, why/for what value it is to clean out a kitchen. And moreover, insurance should cover nearly all of the costs for renovation and replacement (yes, admittedly not an easy task dealing with paperwork, insurance, etc).

And being just a block away from the fire station and apparently having "destroyed" in addition to have been robbed with the aid of several individuals and a truck (per DNA info)...I'm curious how this all settles out.

  5. Looking in the window you see a full bar, a register and the computer at the hostes station. What was stolen? The sticker on the front door from the company that owns the ice maker is usually only put on business the skip out. Wouldn't insurance cover the replacement of lost/stolen items?
On the flip side Starbucks a few doors down was broken into around the same time. Given there's a blue light camera on that corner shared by both businesses are there any leads?

    1. Those blue lights hardly work.

    2. That blue light sure doesn't stop people from coasting thru that stop sign

  6. This is sad. I had dinner there a few years ago and talked to the owner who said he was thinking of pulling out of the neighborhood because of how many times his window had been broken. Now this, which seems like it could be the last straw.

  7. A few years back I went there mistakenly on a Saturday when they were closed. The front door had been left unlocked so I was able to open up the door in non-business hours. Perhaps something like this is how the break in happened?

  8. I passed by there a few days ago and it looked they closed up shop and skipped town. Today, I got a notice from Groupon saying the business is closed and I'm getting a refund (on a recently purchased Groupon).
So I guess that's it. They are gone for good. :-(
