WaveFront Music Festival Moving To South Side?

It's unconfirmed, but several music websites are saying today that the Wavefront Music Festival, which has been held for the past two years at Montrose Beach, will be moving to 31st Street Beach this year, due to complaints about the vibrations from the music.

According to an article yesterday in DNAinfo, Ald. Osterman had requested sound tests prior to signing off his approval on the fest.  UU's own experience is that noise complaints last year came from residents in the north part of Uptown and Edgewater, who heard the bass vibrations more strongly than people right by the beach.  People living on the 4200 block of Marine, near the festival itself, said the music sounded like someone was playing a radio.  People on the 5100 block of Marine told us pictures were falling off the wall due to the vibrations.

Right now the organizers of Wavefront Festival haven't confirmed or denied anything on Twitter or FacebookTreat this as a rumor until official word comes out.

  1. It's so sad that we may be loosing this festival to another part of town. After all, uptown is the entertainment district! We should be helping to find solutions to put our community on the map in a good way ... Not bad ... Though I understand concerns... There has to be a better way to resolve this. Think of the business it generates for our community!

  2. Old people are going to be old. Guess I'll have to go to the 31st street beach and spend my money in that district instead.

  3. Thanks Blue Hairs! This was a fun weekend the last two years for the area. I walked around the event and saw people and families enjoying the music and something different in the neighborhood.
We should move the air and water show out of town also since that actually does rattle the windows for three days each year.

  4. Wavefront should break new ground this year, and be an all-acoustic electronica music festival.

  5. I live on Marine Drive near Foster and have had no noise issues with the festival. Wouldn't turning the speakers out toward the lake help minimize the impact on buildings? If the people who live around Union Park can put up with Pitchfork and North Coast Music Festival for 2 weekends every summer, why can't Uptown residents handle Wavefront for a couple of days? We sure have a lot of whiners around here...

  6. This was voted by NBC Chicago, one of the best parties in Chcago in 2012 AND 2013. FINALLY, there was something in the news that wasn't about a shooting in Uptown, or how seedy the Wilson Red line is. This was good press for Uptown and is one of many things that would eventually make Uptown a happening area of Chicago to live in. Montorse Beach is a great venue for lots of events. If you don't like noise, and you don't like traffic, there is plenty wide open farm country to you to live it. Just my take on that.

  7. I lived at Marine and Buena and never had an issue with the noise. It was pleasant to listen to from the rooftop deck.

  8. This was my favorite festival. I live on Marine Drive near Montrose and the noise was not bad at all. I am so upset at this. We don't have ANY festivals in our area now that this one is gone. For shame, old complainers, for shame.

  9. Anyone know if all the unpaid bills for the festival were resolved?
