Neighbors near 4631 N Kenmore were awakened shortly before 4:20 this morning by a massive response to a fire in that building. It was sold earlier this year and was empty of tenants, although neighbors reported that squatters had been seen living there earlier this week. The building had since been boarded up.
The fire fully engulfed the vintage greystone, which was built in 1901. There was a huge firefighting response, including a helicopter and many firetrucks, ambulances and police vehicles. The CFD's staging area was set up at Sheridan and Lawrence. Initial reports say that no one was found in the building, and we hope that remains true. From daylight photos, it looks as if the rear of the building sustained most of the damage.

It was two doors down from me. I was already awake when I heard the many sirens and thought, "Wherever they're going it must be something huge." On a whim, I thought I'd look out the window. Right then an officer alerted me of the severity of it. As I'm outside a litte while later(looking at the fire-it never did spread to our residence,but we could smell smoke indoors), another officer mentioned Truman being open as a warming center.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. I live a bit east of there and so just heard lots of sirens and was wondering what the heck was going on. I appreciate UU continuing to satisfy my curiosity.
