With Friends Like These....

The Tribune reports:
"In the Uptown neighborhood, at 5:40 p.m. police were called to the 1000 block of West Lawrence Avenue after two people were stabbed, [police spokesman Antoinette] Ursitti said. When they arrived, officers found two people stabbed and learned they both had been stabbed by a third person whom they knew, Ursitti said.

A woman, about age 55, and a man, about age 38, were stabbed in the incident, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. The two were taken in serious condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, he said."
We have to wonder if this is connected to the loitering and drinking that takes place on the south side of the street nearly all day.

  2. The loitering that was once occurring on Lawrence hasn't been evident for quite some time. Literally, months. The evidence of public drinking has also trickled to a small nuisance. It has been reduced substantially so I find this observation confusing. It sucks that this happened, however, so I can't dispute that something bad went down. Hope all recover and someone is held accountable for this incident.

  3. Kelly, there are always people sitting on milk crates and in doorways when I drive past. I imagine since both victims ID'd their acquaintance as the person who hurt them, there will be a fairly quick resolution, unless they refuse to cooperate with the cops at some point. You never can tell.

  4. 3,2,1....public drinking, loitering, ect...= bigger crimes. Do you think the Gold Coast neighborhoods tolerates this sort of thing? The police will arrest public drinkers in a second in the wealthy districts. Here, they get ANOV tickets which quickly go into the garbage.

  5. I wonder if they should bring back the loitering law they had when Daley was mayor...

  6. Caringneighbor, I doubt they will snitch because they most likely will return to the hang out spot. I wonder if CPD can issue ANOV tickets for "Sitting on milk crates in the public way"? Fearless, they had Vagrancy laws back in the day when Madison was skid row.

  7. I don't have details but the scene of the crime was inside the Lorali on Lawrence Ave. Police had the building taped off as they were investigating for many hours. It's a shame because there are several good and long term tenants in this building.
