Planting Seeds, Planting Community

There was a good turnout on Saturday for those creating a community garden at the Post Office at Broadway and Gunnison.  They planted ornamental grasses, lilacs, roses, and marigolds, and it looks swell.  Besides helping Uptown look better, you are building a strong community!  If you're interested in helping with maintenance and/or gardening new areas, contact elindau@gmail.com.

  2. This planting around the historic Uptown Post Office was initiated from across the street on Gunnison by a neighbor and made possible not with public dollars but with donations from individual neighbors and a boost from the North Uptown Neighborhood Association. Some, if not all, of the plants were also donated. To entice people to come out to help, Metropolis Coffee and Baker & Nosh donated coffee and wonderful breakfast foods. It was great to see so many come together to beautify the area around the post office which deserved better than its previously barren ground. While Uptowners often are critical of the service provided there, the building is special. It is a product of the Works Progress Administration created in the 1930s as part of Roosevelt's New Deal. It's really a beautiful Art Deco building, with eagle sculptures out front and WPA era murals inside. Now if only the people at the window would be more pleasant and eager to serve...IMHO.

  3. Thanks, Flying Nun. Uptown Update did an article a few years ago about the murals and history of this branch of the post office, which is a truly fascinating building. It is here.
