"Wake Up! Waltz" Performances Enjoyed, But Just About To End
If you're a Red Line rider who travels between the Lawrence and Wilson stops in the mornings, you may already be familiar with the unusual activities going on just outside your windows. On Mondays and Wednesdays, since May 13th, dancers have been performing "Wake Up! Waltzes" on the rooftops of buildings at 4635-41 N Broadway (roughly between Gigio's and Cricket) and 4660-4668 N Broadway (the building between Clifton and Leland), between 9am and 10am.
But all good things must come to an end, and the last Uptown performance will be Wednesday morning. We appreciate the support of so many people who made this possible: Lakepointe Properties, who own the rooftops; WUW founder Josie Elizabeth Davis; Uptown choreographer Liana C. Percoco; and of course, the dancers who've been getting out there during some very strange and uncomfortable May and June weather and performing like they don't have a care in the world.
If you'd like to make a donation to help the dancers get paid for their dedication, you can do so here. You can visit the Wake Up! Waltz website here and meet some of the dancers on Facebook here.
We'll end with this quote from an interview with The Chamber for Uptown's Lisa Wagner:
"The Waltz evokes an older Chicago, an older Uptown, while celebrating the unpredictable and imaginative character of the neighborhood today."
