We got multiple reports of shots fired around 6:30, and at least one of the bullets found a target.
It apparently happened in the strip mall at the corner of Wilson and Magnolia. Police, fire, and ambulances were on the scene quickly.
Several readers say the shots came from a red minivan with a handicapped sticker in the windshield that sped away on Malden toward Lawrence.
A witness says: "One of the gangbangers who hangs out at Wilson/Magnolia and constantly feeds drugs to the homeless was just shot in the intersection of Wilson/Magnolia. There were 6 or so shots which I heard. After I went onto my front terrace, a dude screamed into his cell phone 'Get the f*** down here --- they shot (don't know his name).' Police pulled up, but the victim was walking with the help from a friend. Looks like they got him in the stomach or maybe an arm/leg. I saw all of the guys who helped him and also feed drugs to the homeless people grinding at the corner of Clifton and Wilson about 5:45. They were all wearing red which I think means Pstone in this neighborhood. Wilson and Magnolia is taped off."
If you saw anything that might help the police, call 911 and report it.
There is a CAPS meeting for this beat happening right now (between 7pm and 8pm) at Truman College. If you're upset about this, go and talk to the cops and neighbors about what happened.
I was at that CAPS meeting and the police reported that the vehicle involved was a white convertible with a black roof...
ReplyDeleteWhat did the alderman say? Oh that's right he wasn't there.

ReplyDeleteThe Alderman was at the meeting. In fact I don't know if he has ever missed a CAPS meeting. He has been at everyone I have ever been to.
ReplyDeleteThe reason why the alderman wasn't at the CAPS meeting because he went to the scene of the incident to support the police and local businessman. I know this because I was there with them. I prefer a representative who gets their hands dirty and that's exactly what James did.
ReplyDeleteI must have some how missed seeing him on the scene, perhaps because I was talking with police for 45min giving descriptions. PB MAYBE YOU SAW HIS DOPPELGÄNGER AT CAPS?
DeleteHave there been any arrests? What do they plan to do to address the increasing violence and shootings in Uptown?
ReplyDeleteI was at this CAPS meeting and I don't know why this is an issue. The alderman or members of his staff are at every CAPS meeting. He was there as were two staff members. They were all their for a safety related meeting at 6:30 before the 7 PM CAPS meeting which they all attended.
ReplyDeleteThe facts of the shooting were announced at the CAPS meeting. The police are in charge of dealing with crime and criminal activity. The crime scene was blocked off with yellow tape until investigators could arrive.
After the CAPS meeting I observed the alderman at the scene talking to the business owner, police officers and nearby concerned neighbors.
I've seen no mention of Uptown in this news, and I also know that it takes more than a single gang/group to create/maintain the violence we see in our neighborhood (ie it's not just the GD's). I also know the plan is full of flaws and opponents (namely, Bobby Rush).
ReplyDeleteHowever, it may be worth a read and some support:
Sen. Kirk Wants 'Mass Pickup' of Gangster Disciples
And somewhat surprisingly, the meeting between the two apparently went well.
@Michael, Do you have any stats to show the increase in violence and shootings in Uptown? I have a feeling (not stats) that violence and shootings are flat or down for the year in Uptown, but if you could show some stats to the contrary, my feeling can be proved wrong.
ReplyDeleteIf not, your statement just seems a bit cliché
Scotto you are correct at the CAPS meeting the Police shared the numbers for the month and the year so far and we were down in every category. Most notable were the decreases in Burgularies, Assaults which last nights incident is categorized as, and Robberies.
ReplyDeleteWe are doing much better than last year. The Police also mentioned that they were able to get all of Uptown labeled as a gang conflict zone and are able to do more widespread gang loitering dispersals than they ever have been.
just another summer night in uptown. Sigh
ReplyDeleteI call the police whenever I see serious gang loitering. I think I'm actually learning the voices of the 911 operators.
ReplyDeleteConversations go as such:
911: What's your emergency
Wang Chung: Hello, this is my daily gang loitering call
911: Oh. Hello... Location? Description?
Wang Chung: Same place, same guys
End.
Makes me think why our society and our system can’t do more. What happened to the war on terror? Can we bring that back please.
Lets think about the near miss, by four inches, of the bullet that struck the restaurant wall where my daughter and her fiancé were sitting. Four inches and she would have been shot in the head while enjoying a celebration dinner. How can these gangs be driven out of the neighborhood? If the police know who they are and where they gather why don't they patrol more often. I am grateful my children are safe today.
ReplyDeleteWow. How did I miss this?
ReplyDeleteI believe the only way to lessen the threat of gangs is to remove what is bringing them into the neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteIf it is true that certain segments of Uptown are incentivizing increased drug sales maybe we should start there?
@Wang Chung, yes I know the feeling
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of Tik Tok Falafel (formerly Alma Pita) no one in the restaurant seen anything. They only heard shots fired that is all. "Americanlt" was wrong when he/she stated that there witness at Alma Pita.
ReplyDelete"Scotto you are correct at the CAPS meeting the Police shared the numbers for the month and the year so far and we were down in every category. Most notable were the decreases in Burgularies, Assaults which last nights incident is categorized as, and Robberies."
ReplyDeleteI don't believe any of the numbers that come as a result of Compstat. Compstat is fraudulent and counterproductive. When the police are pressured to "make their numbers" so that crime goes "down", what they're really being told is to dumb down charges. Notice how the murder rate is pretty much unchanged from 2 years ago (2012 was an outlier). Can't fudge the murder data because you can't hide the body! But hey, you can stop showing up to calls and discriminating which calls you even send a car to.
If crime was down so far, why do we need to label Uptown as a gang conflict zone if there is so little crime?
It just doesn't add up for me.

BB, I'm wondering how you determine if the crime rate has gone up or down? There's got to be a better way other than just guessing.
ReplyDeleteEverytime I decide to go to Truman for the semester someone gets shot.
ReplyDeleteWTF
Who needs evidence that the police consistently lie about their numbers?
ReplyDeleteJust read second city cop blog. It's all there for you to read.
If every time gangus khan decides to go to Truman, someone gets shot, then the answer is for gk to stop going to Truman. That was easy!
