Tax Preparation Help Available

Tax season is starting, and as usual, CEP is here to help.  "The Center for Economic Progress (CEP), a volunteer-based non-profit, will help Chicago’s and Illinois’ low-income families with free, high-quality tax preparation. CEP will be in nearly 15 communities this tax season to help low-income families take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax benefits and keep all of their hard-earned money in their pockets and benefiting their communities.

For 20 years, CEP has been on the forefront of turning tax time into an opportunity for low-wage workers and their families to get ahead.  CEP serves families who make less than $50,000 and individuals who make less than $25,000.

Since 1990, CEP has served more than 320,000 hard-working, low-income families and individuals in Illinois, returning over 470 million dollars, and counting, in tax refunds to clients. Each year, 800 dedicated volunteers donate more than 25,000 hours helping clients receive free tax and financial services. During the 2012 tax season, CEP put nearly 30 million dollars back into the pockets of more than 17,000 Illinois families including $12 million in the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

As one of the largest and oldest statewide programs of its kind, CEP offers an alternative to paid tax preparers, which keep a large portion of each family’s refund – CEP does not take any portion of the tax return. For more information visit, http://www.economicprogress.org/."
