Man Shot In Buena Park

After several days of readers reporting gunshots at various areas in Uptown, but no reported victims, today someone got shot.  According to the Tribune, a man was shot in the butt just before 1pm at Clarendon and Gordon Terrace.  Readers reported hearing four to five shots, and seeing a massive police and ambulance response within minutes.

It happened on the 700 block of Gordon Terrace, within a block of multiple schools:  Disney Magnet School; The Natalie G. Heineman Smart Love Preschool; Lycée Français de Chicago; and the Park View Montessori School.  With the bad aim most of our street thugs have, it boggles the mind to think about what could have happened.

The Tribune is reporting that the police have someone in custody, but doesn't say if it's a suspect.

Be as careful as you can out there.

  1. You forgot to mention that this is across the street from Joseph Brenneman Elementary-- grades pre-K through 8. All those shots were fired directly outside of a school.

    1. *Not directly outside of Brenneman, 2 minor blocks south. As a teacher there, I can report that we were in lockdown per CPS procedure.

I heard 5 shots last night (Thursday) around Larence and Sheridan.. but that's hardly news anymore and I didn't report it. Actually, I figured I'd read about how someone was shot in the finger or shoe on Uptown Update... Seriously thugs - your aim is terrible.

  3. Emily, Brenneman is a few blocks away, at Clarendon and Junior Terrace. This happened on the 700 block of Gordon Terrace, one block south of Buena.

  4. The shooting actually occurred on Clarendon between Jr Terrace and Hutchinson right across the street from Joseph Brenneman Elementary. I heard 5-7 shots and saw two males run south on Clarendon.

  5. Yes I believe it happened closer to Brennemann. The kids heard the shots clearly, they even put the school on code red. What can we do? When can we do it? Does anyone even care anymore? I get the feeling we are biding our time, waiting for a TRAGEDY. Then it will be an upswell of action....How about a little proaction and not reaction

  7. I remember bringing up gunshots at a CAPS meeting once at the Buena Library and the cops smiled. They proceeded to say people don't get shot in Buena Park.

  8. Once again, who are these people with the guns? Where do they live? Do they live in the neighborhood? Then somebody - the alderman, or the police -- should visit the Landlord and get them out.
And arresting someone doesn't mean they're going to jail...a lot of times they let the perp out on bail.

    1. I have heard that question asked at CAPS also..where do they live? They will just tell you the alderman is working with the landlord/or manager. Yet, they are still here... so this tells us what?

  9. I live on the corner of Hutchinson and Clarendon. I was in my front porch with my wife and three dogs when I clearly heard 4 shots and suddenly 2 dudes running south on Clarendon. My son was actually pulling into the garrage on Clarendon as all of this was happening. Over 30 cop cars, undercovers and fire truck stormed and blocked off the area on Clarendon. They interviewed us for information. The police response was amazing and I comend them in hopefully cathing the shooter.

  10. If it hadn't been raining today, my kid would have been outside for recess in the Disney Magnet field facing Clarendon between 12:30 and 1.

How terrifying that the Brennemann kids and staff had to do Code Red and it wasn't just a drill. Disney didn't go on Code Red today.

  11. Anyone have any information, reliable information that is, regarding the ethnicity and/or gang affiliation of the shooter and the shootee?

I'm guessing and I may be wrong that one of the Latin gangs was involved.

Buena Park has relatively few incidents of gunfire and when they occur they typically occur near Cuyler and Broadway or Clarendon. The remnants of the Cuyler Boys Latin Pendejo gang hang out there. They're affiliated with one of the larger Latin gangs.

Time to clean up the remaining two or three gang infested buildings near the corner of Broadway and Cuyler. I don't think any reasonable maintenance or renovation has happened to those buildings in 30-40 years. They look crappier now than they did back in the 80's.

Time to have the Department of Buildings open up a can of whoopass on the owners. Start getting some big fines and selling might look like a nice option.

  12. Contrary to the beliefs in the comments, the Alderman/police can not simply kick people out of their building. As long as the landlords are getting paid the landlords will keep them as tenants.

  13. Uptown Rising nailed it. There has been action to shut lawrence house down for years and it's still a functioning crack den. The only hope for problem buildings is sale...and there are few people in the market for crack dens in the middle of gangland.

  14. Has there ever been a shooter that has come from the Lawrence House that we know of? Any? Ever? People seem a little too eager to make a lot of innocent people homeless. And really that is the solution people think of? Find out where the shooter lives and evict him/her and their entire family. How about ARREST them and PUT THEM IN PRISON! That will effectively evict them.

  15. Alek, aren't you the same guy who was saying that after Sedgwick was rejected, that no one would want to buy or build at Maryville, ever? That it would stand empty for years, decades?

Aren't you the same guy who thinks Uptown hasn't changed or improved since 1976?

Are you aware that Lawrence House has evicted at least 15 of its most problematic tenants and that the commander of the 20th District says that the 911 calls in areas surrounding it have decreased dramatically since the new receivership company took it over?

I don't believe your crystal ball. It's full of doom and gloom. Great things are happening in Uptown. I only wish people like you could see them.

That's exactly what I said...minus one major caveat you are purposefully ignoring. The TIF. I said it would sit without the TIF. Remember when everyone pretended like the TIF was the issue?

Funny how many things on the blog that once drew outrage are all the sudden side-stepped, glossed over or ignored.

    1. I totally agree with you. I remember it being a time when there was zero tolerance for riff raff. Now I see a lot of '' you don't seem to understand''........ for the record, when a manager or a landlord does not like you, they can get rid of you. They have so many tricks up their sleeve, it will make your head spin. I have seen managers harrass families so much, they leave in exasperation. I have seen them bar people kids until they have to leave to reunite their family. So with the right pressure, they can clean up their buildings. They don't want to.
