State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) announced on Thursday that he has been named the chairman of the Appropriations Human Services Committee, a position he plans to use to maintain vital services and assistance for those most in need.
"I'm feeling very honored to be named Chairman of the House Appropriations Human Services Committee overseeing the half of the state budget dealing with healthcare, children's services, senior services, disability services, Medicaid, mental health, substance abuse, public health and other human services,” said Harris.
Harris, a strong advocate for the disabled across Illinois, will oversee a challenging budget process while working to ensure those Illinois residents most in need are not denied critical services. The Appropriations Human Services Committee will hold a number of hearings in the coming months listening to testimony and budget proposals from a variety of state agencies before making final budget recommendations later this spring. Harris will also serve as the vice-chairman of both the House Insurance Committee and the Tourism and Conventions committee and as a member of the Environment Committee and the Restorative Justice Committee.
“I also know we are faced with enormous challenges and incredibly difficult choices as we try to balance our budget, maintain a safety net for those in need, and provide support for Illinois families,” Harris added.
