A Real-Life Reminder:
Keep Your Doors & Windows Locked

A reader writes: "My wife and I were robbed this morning sometime between 6:30am-10:30am. They entered and left while we were sleeping. We live on the corner of Magnolia and Lawrence. Our rear window was opened, which is usually locked, but we forgot to lock it last night even though it was closed. They made away with a laptop and two iPads. Just thought I would get the word out to remind people to lock their doors and windows at ALL times. I am not happy."

  1. Heard nothing on the news or on Uptown Update about the hostage situation 900 block of Wilson last week. Anyone know anything about this?

  2. Same thing happened to us a couple months ago-about a block away. In the middle of the day on a Sat. someone came through an unlocked, open window. But someone was home (which he was apparently not expecting) and he saw them and went right back out the door. Sorry this happened! We have kept them locked and taken other security measures since. I really like Uptown-wish this would stop.

  3. Awful. awful, awful. So sorry to hear this. I'm hoping you alerted your neighbors in your building and filed a police report. I'm glad no one was hurt. I think it was technically a burglary. Regardless, this stinks.

  4. You may still be lucky to get your stuff or catch the person. If you downloaded the app to track your IPAD this would help you track the person. Trust me, i was able to track mine down this way when I lost it and was able to track it down.

  5. I live on the 29th floor and have little worries about creeps crawling into my windows. If I was living in a building that had easy excess to one of my windows, I would have a alarm security system installed on thoses windows that sounds off and automatically calls 911. The monthly fee you would pay would be well worth the peace of mind and safety they assure. A legal shotgun under the bed would not hurt either.

  6. @Nickey, my cousin once had an afternoon burglary in a high-rise, while she was napping peacefully. He came in from the window-washer's scaffold!

  7. I live on the 4700 block of Racine and in July our condo building had two separate burglaries. The first resident had a laptop stolen; the second had a laptop, a jewelry box & some money stolen. The first time the intruder gained access through a kitchen window; the second time through the kitchen door. Police reports were made. Both occurred during daytime hours. A few weeks prior to our incidents, the building south of us also had a robbery. A laptop and children's video games were taken. My guess is these incidents are all related......

  8. We just moved to a close suburb and this is happening all over the place here too. Definitely not how I grew up in the 70s.
