Shots Fired At Argyle/Sheridan

Readers are telling us that there were shots fired around 6:15 at Sheridan and Argyle.  The whole corner is taped off, and law enforcement is on the scene.  A reader tells us he is pretty sure someone was hit by the gunfire.

More as we hear it.

Update:  An ambulance is on the scene as well.

  1. My neighbor was just over there and said two people were shot. Might have been two separate incidents. Be safe out there tonight good citizens of Uptown.

  2. A police officer directing traffic said that he thinks shots were fired. Sheridan is closed at Ainsele and traffic is going West on Ainsele tonight from Sheridan.

A parent at Buttercup Park received a call from a relative on the police force who told her that a Mexican woman was shot while walking with her three children. No info about the children. She appears to be an innocent bystander.

Not a night to take the kids to the playground. A shiny new renovated park doesn't make the neighborhood safe. I turned around and took my kids home right away. In this neighborhood it's likely gang related and retaliation could follow. Be safe neighbors.

  3. I was walking along Sheridan and heard 4 shots fired nearby but didn't see any shooters or victims. People on the sidewalks froze momentarily when the gunfire ended, then calmly continued on as if nothing had happened. In a safe neighborhood, people would have been screaming in terror and running for cover. In Uptown, gunfire is nothing out of the ordinary, unfortunately.

  4. What a summer full of gangs, shootings and just about everything else that comes along with these type conditions. I know there has been progress and many arrests made on these thugs but they seem to just bounce right back. When it is all said and done I feel safer in Uptown then many other crime infested areas of the West and South sides of Chicago.

  7. Man and woman shot, according to the Trib: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-2-shot-in-the-uptown-neighborhood-20120904,0,7503113.story

  8. Two victims according to CPD. The playground in the area is a drug haven, providing gang bangers an opportunity to use kids as great shields.

  10. I would like the photos (mug shots or whatever) of the gang bangers involved posted for the public to view. We need to know who these attempted murders are. There are about 10 gang bangers that I regularly see around here and we on the street need to keep our eyes open when we see them so that we can call 911 to report all of their suspicious activities. I saw a group of gang bangers in the park at Goudy school last night talking about this shooting. They dispersed, and an unmarked police car drove up and I told the police which directions the went in.

  11. 2aaa15c6-49a6-11e0-91eb-000bcdcb5194, you do not need to recognize people to report suspicious activities. Even without mugshots and names, every one needs to call 911 about any and all suspicious activity. The # of 911 calls to a neighborhood determines police presence, in part. And I end up calling 911 about once a week. When I lived in Lakeview I called 911 once, when someone assaulted me in my condo building. Don't walk by suspicious activity without calling 911, even if you're not sure what it's about, even if you just get a bad feeling.

  12. Nothing from Osterman...hard not to get the feeling he's pretending this isn't his ward...Cap would be all over this. Shame because this area is so close...it's literally like the same dozen or so bangers...and about 3 or 4 buildings of crack head regulars.

  13. Hello My Dear Sweet Friends,

On last Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at approximately 6:15pm an unknown assailant begin shooting at the newly purchase church car I was driving as I turned southward onto Sheridan off of Argyle. This black male, approximately 25 to 35 years of age, stepped off the curb of the south east corner of Sheridan and begin shooting at me as I completed my turn. The first the first three bullets entered the driver side, two of which struck me in my left calf. One of the following bullets graze a woman on the west side of Sherdan.

As I “put the pedal to the medal” I heard continuous shooting. Just as I approached Ainslie as thought the shooting would stop as six shots had already been fired. I thought too, that this must be gang members shooting at each other and I got caught in the crossfire. I decided that maybe it is safe to look in the center rearview mirror to see what was happening. To my dismay the shooter was running after my car and still shooting. I ran the light at Ainslie then discovered I was wounded. So I went through the stop sign in front of the boys and girls club, I blew the light at Lawrence and Sheridan, made a right turn driving completely down the wrong side of the street, which was totally packed with cars coming head on,…they gave me the road.

When I pulled into Weiss lot at the emergency room entrance I called for a woman to rush to me with a wheelchair. When I got out of the car I saw the bullet holes and notice a large stream of gasoline flowing from the car. Hours earlier I had put more than sixty dollars of gas in the tank. That, I am told, saved my life. If the tank had only a gallon or two in it then the car would have exploded in a ball of flames as the gas fumes are highly explosive.

The whole experience was somewhat funny, as can be testified to by all of the nurses, doctors, detectives, and police officers that came to me, I was one ball of laughter. No pain, just everything was so funny. Strange but true. And, explainable. Not now, however.

Finally, being the well known and popular street minister in Uptown that I am, I knew it would not be long before who or why was revealed to me. It was a case of mistaken car, as a similar car was involved in a criminal act that involved a get away car. Numerous people with weapons was looking for and watching for that “get away car”. We are blessed that we did not escape the lion just to meet the bear.
