Man Stabbed, Critically Wounded At Beacon & Wilson

A reader writes in:
"I live at 4608 N Beacon, and a man was just stabbed outside in my courtyard. This isn't an isolated incident of violence here and it's getting worse. There are fights nearly every week and have been some break ins as well. I wish the police were more responsive to this."

And more from CBS Chicago:

CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was critically wounded overnight after being stabbed in the Uptown neighborhood.

The man in his 20s was stabbed in the chest about 10 p.m. during an argument in the 4600 block of North Beacon Street, police said.

He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

The man knew the person who stabbed him, police said.

  1. I live near Bronco Billy Playlot and see the same lack of responsiveness. Recently I called 911 FOUR times on one day and had to resort to begging the 911 operator to send someone to the area to get the hijinks under control. The neighbors literally moved a mobile drug lab to the back alley parking lot of the school and sold drugs out of the trunk, all while their friends smoked pot in the park and drank beer. Tired of being told to call 911 when they just won't show up.

  2. Two thoughts:

    1) Take a look at the "911 Calls: Behind the Scenes" here: http://gwna.wordpress.com/2010/09/29/capsgwna-meeting-recap/

    2) One thing that can help get immediate action is the willingness to sign a complaint... but that means you need to follow through post-arrest, go to court, etc. Particularly for noise/nuisance complaints, an individual police officer's "peace cannot be disturbed" -- one of the public's peace must be disturbed for an arrest to take place.

Not condoning the activity (for me personally, there is little that boils my blood as much as the lack of respect for the community when individuals or groups are shouting/partying/etc., particularly late at night), but both the shouting on beacon and the group of rowdy people near Broncho Billy could fall into this "peace cannot be disturbed" category.

  3. Have experienced the same lack of responce by police and I'm sorry to say the aldermans office as well. The play lot near us gooseberry is a hot bed of activity and has been taged and owned by black pea stone nation, despite calls to 311 about tagging.

    1. I may try cleaning it up but right now I'm not giving up on trying to get our "super" new alderman to get involved! Still no returned calls or email from his office

  4. I live across the street from this building and see the police and/or fire and/or ambulatory services visit the building AT LEAST weekly. I've always wondered what they're responding to because I don't believe it's ever "bad enough" to make city-wide news....I guess this time it was. There are a lot of people who I've seen coming and going from the building that look unkempt but don't know if they're visitors or residents. Either way, this is a problem building. People always milling around the sidewalk yelling at each other, cars parking out front laying on the horn, music blaring in the middle of the day...complete and utter lack of respect for their neighbors and the community at large. I've called 911 more times than I can count to report disturbances at all times of the day and I always provide my name, number and address. There's never been any follow up (with me) but the response times by police do vary.

  5. @killerminpin,
If i lived by that park i would just cover up the tags myself or remove, whatever is appropriate, usually goof off to remove or colored match paint to cover works in most cases.

    1. I got a reply from the aldermans office that the gang graffiti is on a master list to be removed when it's the 46th wards turn to have graffiti removal performed, no date is currently scheduled but our ward is on the list? Ugh

  6. Seems like there is not much help to protect citizens from the gangs out there that are in plain view. These thugs laugh at the law. As for myself I plan to carry some type of protection that I can use to defend myself if I am attacked. Dialing 911 for help is a plus but I feel by the time they get there your already wounded or dead. Be aware of your surroundings at all times when your on the street.

  7. Please keep calling 911 and report what you see. Even if it seems like you're not getting the response that you had hoped for, each call is counted. More stats = more attention over time. Police and residents cooperating together will be the only way toward a solution. It won't happen overnight. It's a long slog. Keep calling.

  8. We have lived in this building for two years ( my husband, myself, and my 20 month old) and it has just gotten worse despite the neighborhood making an attempt to get better. We are quiet and respectful tenants, yet we are the ones who suffer. I am a MA/pre med student so there's no way I am going to ignore that.I ran outside to help him while the rest of the neighbors looked on and took pictures from their phones out the windows. There was blood everywhere and this is the result of a fight between people who moved in this summer and constantly cause problems. This is it just coming to a head. I have called 911 so many times for fights and break ins and the police get out of their car, look around, and leave. Our guys at the fire station are always prompt though, and come no matter what and we are grateful for that. This was the final straw and we are moving. I was hoping for a better sense of community, but when your neighbors would leave you bleeding out in your courtyard, then there's no chance of support or progress. I just hope things get better here, but I am not holding my breath. They are already outside, being obnoxious and hollering, sure to be followed by the sweet sound of beer bottles being smashed against the building.

    1. Horrifying death of young girl yesterday. Much help is needed for safe places where indigent people can live.

    2. You're referring to the murder committed by the convict who had previously assaulted the girl's mother (see the separate post for June 12, 2017). You're obviously more concerned about safety for the homeless, which isn't related to this murder at all...how about safety for the people who just happen to live in the neighborhood? This guy shouldn't have released so soon, and shouldn't have been at the girl's mother's home to begin with.

  9. The Democratic Convention has 50 (FIFTY) Chicago Police officers. I hear we don't need them here and according to Stratton “Our deployment remains at full strength here in Chicago".

  10. I was walking my poodle down Wilson shortly after this occured. Unbelievable, it seem to be getting worse. Ya know it's bad when Uptown shootings/stabbing are NOT making the 5pm news.

  11. REEDesign, North Carolina was one of the jurisdictions that sent police officers to Chicago for a week while we hosted NATO. Now that NC is holding its big event, the Democratic Convention, we are returning the favor by bolstering its police force for a week.

Simple quid pro quo. Don't read anything else into it.

  12. TrumanSquarenabr, Nato is and was a non-partisan event, The Dem Convention is not. I'm not reading anything into it. Are you? Simple question...

  13. Fact: The system in place for dealing with these kinds of problems is broken. Lack of Police man power, lack of will and a near useless criminal justice system.

How to solve things yourself: There use to be a guy that would get himself inebriated Friday and/or Saturday nights and stumble around cackling at/to himself in the vicinity of my building. Basically an unpredictable individual under the influence being a nuisance and/or late night criminal of some sort. After having my peace disturbed numerous times I took matters into my own hands. What I did I'll keep as my little secret but he didn't require a visit to the hospital and I've NEVER seen him since. Point of the story, there are numerous ways to solve things yourself, just be stealthy, be careful and know that your actually getting something done that will have lasting positive effects. If I lived near Gooseberry or Bronco Billy, there likely wouldn't be problems anymore so sorry to the folks that do live there now :-)

  14. I should also add that when I've talked about cleaning up the vermin with the Police, they are always impressed and nearly patting me on the back for taking such a hard stance against "them". This wrist slapping that goes on now is a joke hence the overwhelmingly positive results we're getting. That's sarcasm btw.
