16-Year-Old Boy Shot On Winthrop
(But It's Not What You Think)

According to the Tribune,

"A 16-year-old boy was seriously wounded early this morning in a shooting on the North Side in the city's Uptown neighborhood.

About 1:41 a.m., the youth told police he was walking from his residence on the 4600 block of North Winthrop Avenue when he heard shots and soon after felt pain in his leg, said Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez."  Read the rest of the story here.

Update: As Paul Harvey used to say, then there's the rest of the story. Find out why this really isn't nearly as bad as it sounds, in our post later in the day.

  1. This is weird. I live on the 4600 block of Winthrop and I was awake and watching TV at 1:41 a.m., and I was two feet from an open window. I didn't hear a thing, and I know what a gunshot sounds like. So do my cats, and they didn't flinch. I can tell you every other sound on the streets----the cars that scraped the speed bump, the guy who had a ten-minute-long conversation in Spanish just outside my place----but I sure didn't hear any shots fired. I really have to wonder if the address where the shooting took place was somewhere else. The paper says the kid left his home on the 4600 block of Winthrop, but doesn't say specifically that's where the shooting took place. Oh, well, hope he survives. As a friend pointed out, the curfew for a 16-year-old kid is 10pm!

  2. I clearly heard gunshots near the corner of Broadway and Cuyler around 1:40. I am guessing that is where it happened. I am sure he was just a good kid roaming the streets at 1:30 a.m.

  3. I am sure these young kids, under age, have parents or legal guardians. If the law was to hold them responsible for their childs actions and either fine them or give them jail time with their kids maybe it help force the dead beat parents that care little what activitey their kids doing outside the house.

  4. I'd suggest for underage curfew violations, that the youngster be given the chance to visit with paralized gun shot victims and those with traumatic head injuries as a result of a gun shot wound. They can read to them or just help with their personal care.

Kind of like what they are doing for the bird lady.
