Details are very fuzzy right now, but there was a person shot near the U-T Pantry at Sheridan and Lawrence within the past half hour. Readers in the area are telling us that one person was shot in the leg at the corner, and we are hearing from one person that two people are in custody and there is a witness.
We are also hearing that there is a heavy police presence in Sheridan Park, with officers patrolling heavily, particularly on the 4500 block of Magnolia. If this is a gang shooting, the latest CPD strategy is to head off retaliation, and with the P Stones being HQ'd in that area, this may be a show of police strength to head off retaliatory shots.
It's all very confusing -- we will update as we hear more.

"Spoke with the new police commander tonight and also went by the scene where the shooting occurred. Stay tuned for more details from the 46th Ward Office. If you haven't yet done so, please sign up for the 46th Ward newsletter by going to www.james46.org. For now, I can say we have some really good camera footage that will assist us with getting an arrest made."
While walking my dog down Wilson I noticed police everywhere. They seemed to be stopping & asking questions to the "urban youth" that linger around.
ReplyDeleteI was walking the dog by Leland and Sheridan, cops everywhere ...
DeleteThey had two guys on the corner and as I walked by I heard they were witnesses..
I'm hearing a helicopter. What happened now?
ReplyDeleteWe're wondering about the chopper too.
ReplyDeleteReally glad I didn't buy that great condo on Leland near Sheridan. That patch of the neighborhood is alarmingly scary.
15 years ago Chelsea was a shady neighborhood, now it is some of the most expensive real-estate in manhattan. And the west side of Chicago....yet another example. We will get there.
ReplyDeleteNot the whole westside has improved only around the west loop area and around the medical center area. What about humboldt park, lawndale, and austin?

EK is absolutely correct. I lived in Hell's Kitchen in NYC. Also used to be a center for gang activity and crime in the city... now completely revamped! It just takes time and the process isn't pretty. But, yes, we will get there.
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you didn't buy here too, Orange. Save that great condo for someone who will love our patch of neighborhood like the rest of us do.
ReplyDeleteYou can't get upset if that person dosent want to move in that area especially if he's putting in a lot of money in it. Sometimes it just ain't worth it. Who knows how long the neighborhood will improve. Maybe never.
Delete@James - All I can say is thanks for all that you do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all those that say it will take time (and effort) to see changes in our neighborhood.
Let's be patient, but also deliberate in the actions we take to move closer to our shared goals as a community.
So tonight I went to meet up with a friend and I had to take the 151 to Lawrence. Lo and behold I get off the bus and there are about 20 "urban youth" and shady characters in their 20s or so all wearing white tees and such, a few of them drinking and hollering. Right in front of the UT market where the shooting was last night. I picked up my phone to dial 911 but before I could a SUV Cop truck rolls up, followed by an unmarked tac suv and they quickly dispersed. Glad to see CPD on it. They also split up and went through the alleys and such after. These gangbangers are freaking stupid!
ReplyDeleteSystemic example of the problem. There was a group of guys intimidating and blocking the sidewalk in front of the pizza store at that corner. I continued walking and saw a cop car driving down Lawrence. No hurry, just driving around. I asked them to help. Their response? IT IS NOT ON MY BEAT.
ReplyDeleteThis is insane and as a tax payer, pisses me off beyond believe. When I hear about the police needing additional members, and I stop a police car for a problem that is happening NOW, on a problem corner, and told they wont help me because it is not in their beat, means to me they are wasting my property tax money for their salaries and benefits. One side of Lawrence is on beat, the other a different beat. INSANITY and no wonder it will always be an issue as long as this idiotic attitude is out there.
Lets petition to change the beat then, it seems we need all of Lawrence encompassed by one beat and with force.
