Uptown is losing dry cleaners at a rapid pace! This is the fourth or fifth closing we can think of.
Several readers wrote to let us know that, due to a lease dispute, One Price CD Cleaners in the strip mall at 4855 N Broadway has closed, suddenly and unexpectedly. Very disappointing to their loyal customers, who have stayed with them through several price increases.
As one points out, the alternate locations are neither close nor in Uptown.
What local dry cleaners do you swear by? Help some neighbors out with your suggestions.
J & M is fantastic!!!! The owner knows us by name and always take care of us!! Located in the strip mall of lawerence and Sheridan
ReplyDeleteI don't want to sound rude, but good riddance. I used them a few times, and they always left stains of any sort completely untouched, even if they were pointed out and flagged to them. I thought they did a truly awful job as dry cleaners.
ReplyDeleteI am very unhappy. Took a load of stuff into CD and was told they lost their lease.
ReplyDeleteThey always did a good job on my clothes- I was never unhappy. And you can't beat their prices- save me tens of dollars over what similar items like winter coats cost to have cleaned elsewhere.
I hope someone else opens a CD Discount Cleaners franchise elsewhere in the Uptown-Edgewater-Rogers Park area, but the investment required is huge, so I'm not hopeful.
I second that Jenny. JS Cleaner in the Lawrence/Sheridan strip mall is great. Cheap but quality. The Asian lady that is always there is wonderful, always full of delightful cheer even if she has no idea who you are.
ReplyDeleteIf They lost their lease, wouldn't somebody be taking their place?
ReplyDeleteMarigold is going
Annoyance theater is going
What's going on?
Why is it so hard to determine what the backstory is on everything around here.
This is something the Alderman could address and make clear since business is so poor in Uptown.
Stu, why don't you write to Ald. Osterman and ask him for the backstory on the three businesses you've mentioned, all of which are in his ward, and let us know?
ReplyDeleteI like the cleaners on wilson near magnolia next to aardvark insurance. The lady does a great job,I apologize for forgetting the name of the business and her name
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% with Jenny311. J&M Cleaners in the strip mall (in the corner) at Lawrence and Sheridan is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYet another dry cleaners with A PARKING LOT has bit the pavement! I would think that the convenience of parking your car while bringing in a load of dry cleaning would make a LOT of people want to patronize an establishment and would keep it in business! But it seems that the "walk-ups" continue to thrive.
ReplyDeleteOne place with parking that seems to be riding out the storm is in the building on Clark and Leland across from Carol's Pub. The ladies are always so hospitable and insist on giving "kids of all ages" free candy!
There is a great cleaner store on the corner of Clark & Wilson
ReplyDeleteNot sure if that is still Uptown or not? I know it's the safer side of town.
I've used Princess Cleaners in the strip mall at Broadway & Buena (adjacent to the defunct KFC) for years. They're reasonable, very friendly, and do a great job. Plus there's always lots of parking.
ReplyDeleteI've gone rogue to Pine Cleaners on Clark and Summerdale in, yes, Andersonville but I will try the closer to home cleaners mentioned here. Thanks for the recs.
ReplyDeleteI've been going to Monitor Cleaners at Clark and Wilson for 15 years. He's the best.
ReplyDeleteThere is another cleaner with a parking lot at sheridan and winona...lets face it, the market was over saturated and plenty of options remain.
ReplyDeleteMarigold saw an oppurtunity to move to a thriving restaurant strip and took it, no shocker there.
American - Monitor Cleaners at Clark/Wilson is a great "Full Service" dry cleaners and shirt laundry. They will do everything from clothes to curtains and they have on-site seamstresses who'll do everything from button replacement to altering wedding gowns. This means, of course, that the prices are higher but then again so is the quality. They also have "Perks" in the form of dedicated street parking spaces and a tux rental service that is very popular during prom/wedding season.
ReplyDeleteMy only regret is that they no longer have the large parakeet cage (housing up to 8 birds) on-site.
The cleaners at Winona and Sheridan is not a recommendation from my perspective. They don't list their prices (which are high)....they make up their prices, just pull them from air. There is a cleaners (no name?) in the strip mall near Breakers, Sheridan and Berwyn.
