Time Out Chicago: 4 Reasons To Rent In Sheridan Park

Time Out Chicago: Sunnyside Mall

Time Out Chicago

Uptown doesn’t have the best rep, but we predict it’ll pay to put down roots in Sheridan Park—the stretch of the neighborhood bounded by Lawrence Avenue to the north, Montrose Avenue to the south, Clark Street to the west and Racine Avenue to the east. Here’s why.

The Red Line’s getting a revamp.
Expect the Lawrence and Wilson Red Line stops—between a 5- and 15-minute walk for Sheridan Park residents—to follow in the spiffed-up tracks of the North/Clybourn station, as part of $1 billion in state and anticipated federal grants dedicated to renovating the Red Line. Lawrence should be bright and shiny by early next year: CTA president Forrest Claypool recently announced it as one of seven stations whose face-lift will begin this summer. Though no timeline has been announced for Wilson (public hearings are slated for sometime this summer), officials are calling for a complete gut and rebuild of the 100-year-old station.

A new alderman—the first in 24 years—is fighting crime.
In the past three months, Uptown logged fewer police-reported crimes than even Lakeview. According to the Chicago Police Department’s ClearMap crime summary on April 18, Uptown was 27th in overall crime among Chicago’s 77 designated community areas, with 1,087 crimes in the past 90 days; Lakeview was 20th with 1,542; the Loop was 14th with 1,732. Skeptics will say fewer crimes are reported in Uptown because fewer cops patrol the streets, but 46th Ward Ald. James Cappleman seems dedicated to improving the ’hood. Among his accomplishments: spurring a four-month undercover drug investigation that netted 18 arrests. Continue Reading

  1. Word on the street is Three Floyds is looking to open a brew pub in Chicago, lets hope it's Uptown and given them another reason to rent here.

  2. Nice Picture.
Its ridiculous how cool Sunnyside Mall is. This is a very special part of Chicago.

That would be awesome if Three Floyds opened a bar in Uptown. I would definitely go there.

  3. Sheridan Park is a great neighborhood with solid housing stock and easy pedestrian access to pretty much everything a city dweller needs including the Red Line via a soon to be overhauled station. Over the next ten years as fuel prices continue to rise and people migrate back in from the suburbs, underpriced but well-located neighborhoods like Sheridan Park are going to look better and better.

  4. Too bad too many dogs are seen walking through all the plantings along the mall. Dogs should be kept out of that area (not the mall, just out of the plantings). That, and all of the dog poop found in the grass along the sidewalks. People need to be more responsible.

  5. We also are 1 mile from the beach and centrally located between Wrigleyville, Andersonville and Lincoln Square for all of their great bars and restaurants!

  6. I love living in Sheridan Park. We have been here for 4 years and although we have had our share of crime, I have to say, none of it has ever been directed at us. The location is great and I love being able to walk to all the nearby neighborhoods. I feel pretty confident that Uptown in general is going to see some pretty tangible changes in the coming years, starting with the overhauled Wilson and Lawrence stations. We are really glad we bought here.

  7. We have been in this area for four years and are very happy that we chose this neighborhood. Alderman Cappleman is fighting crime and improving the area. Easy access to the red line, brown line, Ravenswood Metra, and a number of bus lines. It's also easy to hail a cab. We're also just a mile away from Wrigleyville, Southport Corridor, Andersonville, Lincoln Square, Montrose Harbor, the beach, the dog beach, etc. All of this city access yet we live on a quiet, tree lined street. Glad to see that new restaurants such as Fontanta Grill are doing well.

  8. We just moved to Sheridan Park at the end of last year. One of our reservations about it was that our unit is very close to the Sunnyside Mall, which we had heard occasionally functioned as an open-air drug market. So far, no signs of that at all. We'll see how the summer goes, but like the rest of the neighborhood, it's been a pleasant surprise thus far. We like it here and are planning to stay.

Maybe someone here can clue us newbies in: has Sunnyside just gotten dramatically better over the last couple years? As it is, it's a nice asset that I would be sad to see converted back to a through street.
