  1. That area remains the red-headed stepchild of the 48th ward.

  2. waaaayy too close to home for me.

I'd love to know if this was a gang-related shooting, as they often are. If you live in this area, please continue to call the police on the numerous transient groups of men loitering, cat-calling, gambling, etc. I refuse to get off the Argyle stop after dark anymore.

The packs of teenagers looking for trouble has increased in this area as well- I called the police on a group last fall and one was arrested. We know they are up to no good- please call police when you see anything suspicious. If it becomes annoying to them to do their business here, they will move on. (and yes, I realize that's not a permanent solution).

  3. I've had the awful experience of walking by Kenmore and Argyle, a block from here, and watching the drug dealer stationed on the corner get into a heated argument with a rival gang member driving by. I wouldn't doubt this shooting was drug/gang related.

  4. Would be nice if Alderman Osterman addressed both that area and the gangs hanging out at the JJ Peppers mall at Lawrence and Sheridan..both are in his ward and I have not seen/heard a thing from his office about either one..

  5. I called the cops just last week when I saw a drug deal go down on the corner of Argyle and Kenmore. I was walking home from the train...it was mid afternoon. Not suprising that something happened on this corner...there's always unsavory characters hanging around there just around the corner from the storefronts.

  6. I agree Brandon. Lots of unsavory street people who are always loitering. Off topic but why don't the police impound the cars with those loud stereos going "boom"??? They shake my windows & are considered a noise violation.

  7. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, local businesses and citizens have to call 911. If they dont fight for their community, well no will fight it for them. I think the problem sometimes is that the owners are foreign and they would just expect the cops to fight it out for them. I have noticed kenmore and argyle especially to be a problem corner.

(many dice games). Cool for movies and shootouts on tv shows but not in real life.

  8. jeffo, my police friend tells me an unbelievable amount of shootings occur due to these "dice games." Of course, people think this is just a minor type crime yet helps contribute to the violence. They don't tolerate these sort of "quality of life" crimes on the Goldcoast. Vagrants stay clear of that area.

True about the dice games and I've called 911 numerous times re: the semi-permanent thug casino that sets up shop in front of the abandoned synagogue.

But the reason the Gold Coast doesn't have this problem is the gold coast isn't loaded with poorly managed low income properties like Kenmore/Winthrop...not because it isn't tolerated.

  10. Alek, the gold coast is located next to downtown. Where the chronic homeless & professional panhandlers are located. They know not to go down into the residential areas because the police will arrest them for these "quality of life" laws.

  11. Glad to hear the dice games are being called in and such. More bad building turnover will help the area like nothing else.
