Things That Go Boom In The Night

Last night at 10:30pm, there was an "insanely loud" boom heard by many residents, accompanied by a flash of light.  Posters on our Facebook page narrowed it down to the alley between Malden and Magnolia, south of Lawrence.  It sounded like a transformer exploding, except no one's reported any lights out.

Anyone have any further information?

Update from a reader:  "I saw on your Facebook page that folks were wondering if the loud 'boom' they heard was a gunshot or a transformer.. It was a transformer--I live on Malden and it was in our alley. There was actually a small fire for a few minutes, I was going to call the fire department but I heard a girl calling in the alley alerting them to the fire so I didn't have to call it it. By the time the fire department got there the fire had gone out and then later a utility truck came to work on it. Just wanted to update you on that!"
