Scaffolding Up Around Old Salvation Army Building

1025 W. Sunnyside as seen this afternoon.
A Facebook fan alerted us to the fact that scaffolding has now gone up around the old Salvation Army building at 1025 W. Sunnyside, just across from Target. A quick look at the permit on the scaffolding still lists Salvation Army as the owner and it states that facade repairs are being made. We can only hope that this is because the building is in the process of being sold to an owner that will actually take care of the building and restore it to its former glory. The black netting around the top of the building has been up for close to 4 years now. This could one day become a real gem in the 4400 block of Broadway. More details as they become available.

  2. I have a suggestion. If this is going to be at one end of the "Entertainment District", wouldn't a great BBQ/Microbrewery/Live Local music venue, be a great addition?

  4. Yes I agree with Al. This is a pretty key building. Something really cool should go in there.
Pretty overdue for alot of things to be going on in Uptown.

  7. Great ideas about what should go up there. Has anyone heard yet about a buyer? I would imagine a buyer's desire for that place would be a major factor with what ends up happening there.

I can only guess what's happening with the scaffolding right now but I highly doubt the owner of this building wanted to do it. No work started on it after it went up so my bet is that the city is requiring it. Maybe it will pressure them to work harder to make it sell.

  8. Independently owned businesses bring in the tax dollars. Tax dollars help fund all sorts of other things.

More private business in Uptown? Yes, please.

  9. Can an establishment go there that sells alcohol as it is right next to a school? I personally would love to see a micro beer bar restaurant music establishment like a Schubas go in.

That really is an anchor location for the entire stretch of Broadway. I feel like if something is done well it could really lift the block. But if a "fish farm" goes in.......

I wonder if even our former Alderman believed that was a good idea when she said it?

  10. I'll always wonder what she really had planned for that space, seeing as fish farming was and remains illegal in Chicago. Not that that couldn't have changed, or won't, but it seems disingenuous to commit to the use of millions of dollars of TIF funding for something that's not legal in the municipality whose taxpayers are footing the bill.

  11. Re: Uptown Vegetarian, I don't know the legality of an establishment selling alcohol next to a school but I know that Target sells alcohol and it's located right across the street also. There's numerous examples of restaurants that serve alcohol being located near schools.

  12. While we're at it, a Chipotle at the old KFC site on Buena and Broadway would be a stupendous addition also!!!
