Hang Ten

Readers reported a lot of police and rescue activity at the lake Tuesday night.  Turns out there was a happy ending to what could have been a tragedy:
An elderly motorist drove a car to the end of a pier at Montrose Harbor late Tuesday, leaving the car teetering over the edge, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said.  The driver, an elderly woman, was safely removed from the Volkwagen Jetta and didn't fall into the 36-degree lake water, authorities said.
You can see a photo and read the whole story on the Trib's website.  Given how many deaths there've been in Lake Michigan lately, even after the person in the water has been rescued, we are especially happy that this elderly woman was not another sad statistic.
