Season of Giving

There are multiple ways to make the season bright for someone less fortunate than you.  Below are a few local ones:

  • In the 48th Ward, Ald. Osterman's office is collecting hats and mittens for schoolchildren. "Between now and December 21, the 48th Ward office is hosting a Winter Hat and Glove Drive. This drive will collect new or gently used winter hats and gloves, which will be donated to students at Swift Elementary, Goudy Elementary and McCutcheon Elementary.  You can drop off your donation in the 48th Ward office lobby at 5533 N. Broadway.  Our office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am - 5pm and Tuesdays from 9am - 7pm. We are also collecting $5 or $10 gift cards to stores that sell winter hats and gloves. We will be collecting items through Wednesday, December 21. Feel free to call our office at 773-784-5277 with any questions."
  • Although it's not in Uptown, much of Care For Real's clientele is.  "Care For Real, Edgewater's food pantry, is hosting a Holiday Toy Drive. They are looking for new, unwrapped gifts, primarily for teen-aged youth.  Presents are accepted at their office at 5339 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, IL 60640 from 8am-4pm Monday - Fridays, 9am -1pm on Saturdays.  Presents will be distributed on December 20th, 2011 from 10am -5pm.  We ask for new, unwrapped toys so that our families are able to choose the right present."  Contact Care for Real at 773-769-6182 or info@careforreal.org with any questions.
Even if you don't have much, we urge you to give to someone who has even less.  It'll make you feel warmer inside than a glass of spiked punch.

  1. Can someone explain this a little bit better, please? The flyer is not real clear in my opinion. Does one just bring unwrapped presents to Alderman Cappleman's office? -OR- Do you have to stop by the Alderman's office first to get the name and particulars of a specific child before going out to buy a present for that child and dropping the present back off at the Alderman's office? Are there spending limits? Thank you.

  2. I wonder if you noticed the phone number of the alderman's office on thr flyer? My bets are they might be better able to answer your question.

  5. Bluestreak, thanks for pointing that out. I added the address and phone number to the original poster that we got from the office and it's my fault. All fixed now.

  8. MC, with all the ton of misinformation that gets out there, why not go to the source? I wonder why you would then encourage someone to then depend on a blog for factual information?

  9. Ray,

Though I would like to help I don't know the answer to your question. I'd give them a call to check it out. The number is 773/878-4646. They are pretty helpful over there.

That's encouraging... not "Hey douche-bag, can't you read?"

This is a neighborhood blog. Be more neighborly. (You are not the only one.)
